Stow Away

What a week *sighs* of lazy loafing and sunny strolls around Stow-on-the-Wold. Where, bolt-holed away from the usual rush and bustle, a seven day stretch-out feels more like a fortnight. Highlights of this trip (our 9th now) include.

A cross-country ramble to Chastleton House. Sold by Robert Catesby (mastermind of Gunpowder/Parliment plot) to fund Guy Fawkes fireworks.

An improv tour of the Cotswolds Brewing Company - beer literally brewed in a barn.

The Glam Rock Pigs and minted that morning lambs at Old Farm

And Puffin Annual Number One found at Evergreen Livres

Just one low point. A £3.25 scotch egg from Daylsford Organic which tasted only of reformed cardboard and Gloy.

If you're ever heading that way, two new(ish) tunes perfect for rolling around the wolds are..

She & Him - In The Sun

Harper Simon - Shooting Star

Although track of the trip had to be...

  1. Welcome back. We're a (fairly) short drive from one of my favourite places up that way Moreton On Marsh. Lovely place

  2. Sounds splendid Mond; England when the sun shines, can't be beat.

Word verif = 'fulpolos' - necessary for the car (though my old man always had Murray Mints.

  3. Cheers Simon. Morton's a treat - but Stow has the edge for me. Broadway and Chipping Campden are also worth a vis'. Or try Blockley for the ford that runs down the street rather than across. Or have a pop on the 15 minute walk from Lower Swell (just west of) to Upper Slaughter via the Wardens Way - magic. PS Morton had a market selling almost nothing but outsize undies when we last visited.

fulpolos - were they the travel sweets sold in circular brass tins covered in icing sugar (the sweets not the tins)? And wasn't barley sugar meant to be the travel sickness wonder sweet? PS love the new look you..

  5. Probably my fave top as a young'un, was from 1977 (had to be didn't it?). A Lord Anthony zip up in cream with black and red bands around the cuffs, waistband and on the monkey jacket style collar. There's a pic of me wearing it amongst the structures at Stonehenge (I'll upload one day). I'm still a terror for a zip up now. 'Another one?' is the usual cry when I get a newie though..

  8. Ah, it's hard to beat Blighty in the springtime. And it's hard to beat a zip-up cardie. My squeeze has got loads of 'em.

  9. That's about the sum of it Chazza I work in London, so great to be away from the usual grime and grind.

I'm thinking of forming a band called Volcanic Ash F~ron, purely to cash in on all the free name checks and promo possibilities 'Volcanic Ash coming to your town soon' etc..

It is glorious there ISB, and like being dropped into the set of The Titfield Thunderbolt. Zip Up tops 'o mine tend to be the retro trackie type. The sort of thing Bullet Baxter from Grange Hill would've worn.

PS you can also get the best caramel shortcake ever in Digbeth Street, Stow..

  10. Did you find The Ox's gaff? The records he was blowing to bits in his back garden, for the Success Story video shoot, were Roger Daltrey gold discs!

  11. Quarwood - yes you can see it on top of the hill as you come into Stow from Burford. I've found a footpath that runs through the grounds, so will have a ramble about on the next visit, perhaps tie it in with a trip to Keith Moon's pub/hotel The Crown and Cushion in Chipping Norton..
