Happy New Year all you bloggers and browsers. Stepping softly and slowly into 2011, how about a couple of nicicles to add a frosted glaze to the goings on: two Teutonic tunes from art rockers Neu! - fitting the fluish, foggy mood of the mo'
The brisk, beaty and wintery instrumental of Isi (with an under-bubble of Deck the Halls) is something that soundtracked my slippery steps to the station and back during last January's drifts.
Neu! - Isi
Is it me or is there a touch of Dirk Wears White Sox meets Little Drummer Boy about Seeland
So far I've only got Neu! 75 - so any recommendations on where else to dip into the Krautrockers catalogue would be much appreciated
Sehr gut Herr Mondo die Musik gefällt mir. Wir fahren fahren fahren auf der Autobahn, etc.
ReplyDeleteMondo the problem you have is you've started with their best work. Neu! & Neu! 2 are good, but not a patch on Neu! 75. I'd suggest checking out Harmonia instead, Musik Von Harmonia is a good place to start.
ReplyDeleteBy the way do you hear Lydon's sneer on Hero too? As well as the obvious Bowie connection?
Das ist gut! C`est fantastique!
ReplyDeleteMusik Von Harmonia *adds to Amazon list* Yes, good point Gary I can hear the Lydon tone now - hadn't twigged that before. Also electro Eno too, the Before and After science sound and After the Heat album with Roedelius. Out mutual friend Paul Tunk's gave me this album last year..following some pub banter about it
Cool, it's good to know Paul still has decent taste in music. Other Komische Musik that is currently rocking the Fowles residence, are the Moebius & Plank album Rastakraut Pasta (I know but it's better than it sounds), and the Cluster & Eno album.
ReplyDeleteI love After the Heat too. The Belldog is one of my favourite Eno moments (of many).
You can't beat pub banter. New podrophenia soon perhaps?
The reviews on Rastakraut Pasta look a top notch, so that's on the list too..
ReplyDeleteBegegnungen is a similar winner..Pitch Control from it, is a tune I've been meaning to log in the blog for over 3 years now...
And this is worth grabbing if you haven't
Ja, ja. Neu! ist fantastiche
ReplyDeleteMondo I think I have everything on Begegnungen already, since it's a compilation. That Soul Jazz release looks like a doer though. Might have to have a look around for a review copy. I'm quite interested in checking out Faust too.
ReplyDeleteI could go mad for this style of electro-70s songbook Gary - but it's knowing where to start. The Soul Jazz release is a must-grab. I spotted almost 3 tunes borrowed by Eno on the first listen..
ReplyDeleteHave you checked out his King's Lead Hat B-side R.A.F - grab here if not
got any Boney M?
ReplyDeleteMondo I have a really nice Eno box that has that b-side on it. I love that song, it very much in the style of what he'd go on to with David Byrne. I agree about Eno half inching things from those German types. I think they were on the same wavelength.
ReplyDeleteAs for where to start Neu! 75 is as good a place as any, I think you'll find that there are certain people that you like and if you follow their career then you'll stumble upon things of goodness. Rother for instance. It's too early in the morning for me to write about this stuff. :D
Happy new year!
ReplyDeleteYou can grab a tune covered by Boney M here...P
ReplyDeleteIs that the Eno vocal box Gary? I've got that - killer!
And to you Simon..
Both Neu! and Neu!2 are worth getting, moments of brilliance in both. I posted a track from Harmonia a while back- the album's good. Mainly though you should get La Dusseldorf- anything you can find- utter genius and beauty from one half of Neu! The two albums are La Dusseldorf and Viva (which contains Rheinita, 10 minutes of insturmental, happy Joy Division). Wunderlich.
ReplyDeleteYeah that's the one Mondo. Totally agree with SA, La Dusseldorf are the nazz.
ReplyDeleteCheers chaps both are going on the To Neu! list...
ReplyDeleteBTW have you checked out Baltic Fleet from Blow Up's electric sections
