Podrophenia - Once Upon a Time in Basildon

 


The latest Podrophenia rewinds to Bas-Vegas during the summer of punk, captured in the pages of Strange Stories fanzine - featuring The Vicars, The Machines, Grinder and Mik Bostik - a scene that led to Depeche Mode, Yazoo and links with The Cure.. 

Also London squat-life and sleeping in Sid Vicious' bedroom - through to Adrian's Records in the 80s.

Andy J Gallagher joins us live to play tracks from and chat about his new album Ego. Roman Jugg who produced the album sits on the sesh and gives us exclusive news on *two* Roman solo albums due later this year..

Podrophenia No Theme with Rob Glazebrook and Pete Zear



There was so much to load into this month's Podrophenia - rock, roll, punk, blues, dodgy disco and perfect pop we didn't even have the space to squeeze in a theme....

Rob Glazebrook gives us the news on his R 'n' R festival taking place at The Railway in September - spins in a freshly pressed Broadkasters single - and DJs some crackers from his own record collection

Kev Daintree and Pete Zear swing in to give us the info and spin in Pete's '79 single Tomorrow's World (featuring The Ruts on rhythm section, Alf and Susan Ryder Paget on backing vox) produced by Rat Scabies - which has now been rerecord by tranarchist glam-punks T Bitch

Not-so-Tiny Piley brings us up to speed with his summer travels, train tips and takes over the decks for a couple of recommended records Ian Piley and I pitch in with a disco refit of Pink Floyd, and a cut from the new David Woodcock album Fill up your listening lugs below

Five, live years of Podrophenia nights



Tomorrow we celebrate five years of Podro live nights here

Our first being a team-up with Retro Man - featured Bif Bam Pow and the Len Price Three

Our last was Thee Cee Cees featuring Joe Strummer's drummer, Paul Weller's bass player and Billy Brentford of Thee Faction

Between both we've been visited by travelers to Southend from Yorkshire and Holland.

Had sleb punters, Mike Herbage, Paul Slattery, Wilko Johnson and Gaye Advert
And Stage invasions, three single releases and me depping on bass for one gig

The Ends - Sell Out!


Hells bells and hat's a popping - worra night of heavy volume, hi def amazingness at Southend's most musical boozer. And rammed to the point of the pub doors being locked and - one-in/one-out by ten of the clock. 'Carnage' as Ms Sadie Hasler called it

So smart work Southenders. Glowing salutes and toots are due to all the drinkers and dancers, the vinyl buyers, those that swished in from Southend, Londinium and Holland for the hi-jinx, the top rocking Canvey massive that caused a health and safety alert of hi-vol and max capacity... Radio Podrophenia - the Letter V. Now up for download

Steven Hastings from Harbour Bazaar spotlights a classic Velvet Underground album with a rare take of a VU tune. Gentleman George Crockford from Box of Delights mans the Tech Decks - and our special guest is Chris Constantinou ex of Adam and the Ants talking about covering a Velvet Underground lost song and working with Tony Visconti on Adam's Vive Le Rock album and his current project The Mutants

Tune-wise we've got South African soul, Motown stompers, first-wave and now-wave punk

Podrophenia Alphabet: V is for Velvets, Visconti and Vive Le Rock




Pod-bods: tonight it’s the February issue of Podrophenia, where we’ll be thumbing through the 'V' chapter of our Podrophonic Alphabet…

Pal Piley is out of action for this edition but – but Steven Hastings from SFOB’s show Harbour Bazaar will be stepping in and bringing some of Harbour's formats and features with him - focusing on a key/classic album and introducing us to Cover/Uncover..

Roll-out wise, we’ll be after #spiritsongsorsingsers and asking - do Schpunk have a point that 'boxsets retrospectively ruin your childhood'

Podrophenia's Fifth Anniversary birthday bash - one month today

Boys, Girls, rockers, rollers and residents within the Podrophenia postcode. On November the 14th. We celebrate FIVE years of one of Britain’s longest running podcasts - Podrophenia, (yes, we really have been doing our podcast, radio , DJing and live-night shenanigans for a FIVE years now!).

Naturally, the event takes places at Southend’s most rock ‘n’ roll local, and Podro HQ – The Railway. Upstairs, there’ll be live music from Canvey’s newest new wavers The Ends - with support band (TBA). Followed by Piley and self DJing for the aftershow in the downstairs bar…..


If you’ve ever listened in, downloaded, contributed to anything Podrophonic - come along, raise a glass, shake a leg and bring a pal. Kick off is at 8pm and we run ‘ til last orders. Salut!
