The Southend Jazz Five
Dave Jazzy Dawson not pictured
This month's Podrophenia is a jazz-off with all shades and shapes of the form's modal tones gathered together - and includes something for everyone from beatniks to boppers, or even newbie jazzers who don't know their Acid from their elbow.
We've also got - replace the word 'love' with 'jazz' in song titles. And as a centrepiece - four live tunes from the American Songbook delivered by Dave Woodcock and Hannah Marsh ..
All contained hereabouts - dig in jazzers

Tune In for Charity Shop Classics
Suggested by David Wright - the theme for this evening's Tuesday night shindig is Charity Shop Classics. Theme tunes, Studio 2 Stereo albums, Herb Alpert and Hallmark TOTP make-overs are all appearing on the Radio Podrophenia playlist...live from 9. It won't be a complete cheese board, we're also donating Big Beat, Beatles covers and Shirley Bassey belting out the funk.
Along with some natter and banter on best/worst buys, and an eye-spy guide to charity shop stock - books: James Bond, Jaws, Blue Peter annuals. Records: MFP, The World of comps...gadgets: sketch-a-graph'.
If you're an Apple or Android user, you can now lend a digital ear to Chance Radio via the TuneIn app. And if you missed it or fancy a re-run of last week's charabanc around the musical song map you can climb aboard below

Sometimes it's hard to be a woman
I'm a little bit country. I'm a little bit rock 'n roll
Take your partners for a rootin' tootin' tear-up as we go 'Kinda Country' on tonight's live action Radio Podrophenia - where everything from Abba covers to Zydeco stompers get pitched in the pot.
The Elvis back catalogue has been on and off the subs bench all week, as I've been doing some king-size juggling between outtakes and obscurities from the undubbed masters album One Hundred Years From Now and the blue-aired booty Cut Me and I Bleed, which in essence, is Effing and Jeffing with Elvis.
Similarly I still can't decide which way to swing on the offbeat. Either Marlene Webber's Stand By Your Man or the banjo 'n' blue beat bounce of Beverly Hillbilly Ska
And Fi Jacobs from The Railway Hotel drops in for a round up of what's on at Southend's most rock 'n' roll local during October. So buckle up from 9 for a ride around Podrophenia country
Marlene Webber - Stand By Your Man
Granville Williams Orchestra - Beverly Hillbilly Ska
Natter-wise I'd like to try and nail look-a-likes for this 'orrible lot. I'm claiming Mr Top Left as David Beckham - but what about the other salty ol' sea dogs..?
This masterclass in nifty-fingered frettery from Albert Lee will be appearing at some point tonight..
If you're not iTuned up - you can load up last week's Radio Podrophenia via this MP3 DL

Pop Quiz: Music for Schools and Colleges
Piley and I go back to school this evening, not in the literal sense, but by assembling a register of 12 tunes to be called tonight: XTC, Ben Folds Five, The Casanovas and a legendary blues-grinder gets on the good 'n' funky foot - but who is it ? Find out from 9 on Chance Radio.
Subjects on the timetable for chat and natter are likely to include..film's/TV we've never seen. School based songs/bands...Prefect Day, Dexy's Cross Country Runners - you get the idea...
But for today's test, which Schools and College progs were these the themes for?
Nearly but not quite as there's too much noodle-doodle do for tonight's doings

B is for....
Bardot, Beastie Boys, Barbara Streisand doing Bowie and a bagful of other B-based tunes and musicians..all getting bumped into the musical tombola that is Radio Podrophenia. Here to badger and bother your ears from 9 tonight on S6...
Natter and banter is likely touch on the idea of TV and film titles fused with musicians , along the lines of...
Six Million Dollar Manfred Man
Incredible Shoestring Band
The Family Catweazle
It Ain't Half Hot Mumford and Sons
And casting for a live action Peanuts. Charlie Brown and Snoopy are sorted, any others let us know..

John Barry - They Shot, He Scored
The Reaper's certainly set briskly about his grim business this year, carrying out a ruthless recruitment campaign - John Barry being the latest to get his call up papers
I never got round to reading a John Barry biog although I've been meaning to for years. From the scraps I've gathered through other books - he seems to have led something of a James Bond-ish lifestyle during the swinging sixties: King's road address, film star girlfriend and international swishing with the champagne and sports cars set
And what a body of work from Bond to Born Free, Harry Palmer to The Persuaders. I'm no music theorist but - his innovative instrumentation (using everything from cimbaloms to synthesizers), the scope of his widescreen arrangements and minor modal motifs - could pluck your heartstrings like a harp.
A personal fave is perhaps a lower known TV theme but distillation of the Barry technique and almost a companion piece to The Persuaders, a melancholy toybox style arrangement - opening the Orson Welles Great Mysteries TV show*....
For something that John Barry himself described as near biographical I would recommend The Beyondness of Things - you can try a track over at Davy's place
John Barry - Orson Welles Great Mysteries
Of all the 007 themes - this, to me, is the Bondest of them all...

Me and my SHADO
Did you ever have a Dinky Interceptor ?
Now, I'm not typically given to Fortean type mysteries and mumbles - but wouldn't it be just smashing if, ex-NORAD bod Stanley Fulham's predictions of ....
A. There will be a major UFO display over Moscow between the end of the first part
of January 2011 and the second week of January 2011.
B. Followed by a major display over London approximately seven-days later.
Actually came to hill of moonbeans - with some silvery outer spacers a'hovering Dr Who style over London town...(Perhaps similar to the flying Dorito seen looming over Red Square). Unless of course, it's the style of green-skinned, contact wearing omni-bothering space bandits that gave Ed Straker and his SHADO chums such an almighty run around...
To his credit Stanley is the same chap who predicted 'UFOs' over New York on October 13th.. last year...
Barry Gray - UFO theme (Alt Version)
Two versions of the UFO theme in this clip...
Why not nip over to London Lee's for a few more ET tunes...and as a bonus lend your lugs to Tom Middelton's walloping War of the Worlds remix
Jeff Wayne - Eve of the War (Tom Middleton Mix/Mondo Edit)
Gotta love those Anderson designs - almost equal to any of the Star Wars techno gear and gadgetry

Wilde Boy - Tony Curtis RIP
It may sound strange, but Tony Curtis as Danny Wilde in The Persuaders was one of my earliest heroes and influences. It was the snappy chat and fancy togs that did it. I begged mum to get me a pair of kiddie driving gloves: velcro straps and knuckle cut-outs, some pretend leather trousers (beige the same colour seen here) and a yellow and blue suede suit as part of my Danny Wilde dressing-up gear.
The magic's still there. We spotted a Persuaders Ferrari Dino in the local Broadway a couple of weeks ago - I'm no petrol-head, but what a moment, the ol' ticker went up a gear instantly.
Anyway enough of my ol' guff and nonsense - let's raise glass for Bernard Schwartz. Another legend lost...

Postcards from Walmington
After chowing down a minimum of two Dad's Army episodes per night, how could we not detour off to
Nether Row (renamed Percy Street in the show): pops up frequently in Walmington street shots, including the corking but rarely repeated missing-knickers episode Man Hunt.

Three raw recruits raring to sign up for the Walmington Home Guard
Thetford Guildhall (Walmington Town Hall): the Time on My Hands episode (or The German Pilot Trapped on the Clock Tower One to give it it's full title) is centred almost entirely on the 19th century clocktower..
You'll also find Mill Lane, perhaps Thetford's most viewed road seen during the closing moments of The Deadly Attachment (or The 'Don't tell him, Pike!'One to give it it's full title), The Bell Inn - lodgings for the cast during location work, also used for the opening shots of the debut episode. All these, the Dad's Army Museum and plenty more Walmington backdrops are all doable and viewable within a one hour wander..
We would have factored in a trip to the Bressingham Steam Museum if we'd known of the gold contained therein. But that's another trip for another time...

Hurrah! Things seem to be moving to a better, brighter and more manageable position, so I'm in the mood for getting back on the good foot(y) and giving two formations of Young Scene (The Big Match theme) a run-out. Keith Mansfield's original versh and a sprightly, sporty refit from The Graham Walker Sound
Think of this fixture as a pre-season friendly for Friday's post

Dear Diary - April
It's the return of 'Urcha' - Son of Urcha perhaps? Bit of a dry month entrywise, apart from new jeans, a karate poster (still in my mum's loft: the poster, not the jeans), one lost pound and slow down in the disco business. Strangely, several of the tunes from this chart were bought but not captured in the calendar (Pop Muzik and Lucky Number were nearly, but not quite bagged too). So what Pick of the Pops should we go for..
Silly Thing - well, we had the Pistols last month
I'm an Upstart - too rowdy
Cool For Cats - strong possibility of getting blog-whacked
(I had a DMCA takedown last week)
Meaning it can only be a reworked theme tune that is an urgent anthem for teenage tear-ups..
The Dickies - Banana Splits

If you noticed Chic's I want your love in the chart above, there's a reggae refit right here if you fancy grabbing.
PS the ghost of Malcom McLaren haunts this chart.
Silly Thing - sleeve design by college chum Jamie Reid
Pop Muzik - written and performed by college chum Robin Scott
Siouxsie And The Banshees - managed by McLaren's assistant Nils Stevenson, whose brother Ray Stevenson was the Pistols first official photographer

Goodies Friday

You may have spotted the 'man eaten by lion' doodle in the last post, a scribble entirely influenced by two of my compulsive pre-teen reads: The Goodies File and The Goodies Book of Criminal Records (along with the regulation Python books)
Almost the missing link between The Monkees and Monty Python, I've never become bored of The Goodies at their best. And even now, my two tots drip fed on a digital diet of untold rolling, scrolling satellite channels and rapid-fire, multi-format entertainment, regularly ask for an episode of The Goodies..
So what a result then to bag a copy of their New LP for just one Earth pound in a local vinyl shop (Genie, Leigh Broadway). Untypically for TV comedy albums it's not all sketches, skits and sound effects. No, no,no - some slinky 'Superstition' style riffing can be found amongst the comedy songs - putting the fun into funky.
The Goodies Theme
The Goodies - Custard Pie
The Goodies - The Cricklewood Shakedown

PS does anyone know what The Goodies Spangles style font's called ? I'm gagging to get a copy..
