Do You Remember Your First Time?
Your first musical post that is - and what the trigger, tune or track was that got you fired up enough to start blogging and cataloging the collection ?
One number did it for me. An instrumental obscurity, that randomly dropped into play by a group, who, ironically, have rarely popped up on my player since, and have never been captured on the blog - apart from my first ever MP3 post that is..
So who was it? Soft Cell, that's who.
Given this, The Cell, seem well overdue for another punt on the PM blog. Tarred forever with the Tainted Love brush, it's too easy to forget what a rabid and devoted following they developed, that they were too shadowy and almost sleazy to sit comfortably alongside other eighties glossy Top of the Poppers. Or what quality pop they produced.
Kings of the 80s 12-inch format. Insecure Me (B-side to Bedsitter) is tick-list of all that the Softies do best
Galloping arpeggios
Grubby glamour
Seedy nightlife

I can't remember and I blew my original blog away in a fit of depression in the middle of last year. Checking on the current blog it appears to have been a Julian Bream documentary on BBC4... there now that was possibly not what people were expecting
I have no clue. My Dino Lounge blog is about Dean Martin and the Rat Pack. I obviously was inspired by them to start my own blog.
F/Ron - that wouldn't have been the Yentob Documentary about the history of the guitar would it?
Keith - what about Sugar and Spice was there something that kicked the idea off for you?
that'll be my 'still getting comments'c16/seasick steve blogpost then.....

just providing a service the rest of us cloth eared alcoholics out there...
hic...
'mazing still pulling 'em in on the c16 run...
I remember it well: X-Ray Spex' "Germfree Adolecents" and Bis' import-exclusive cover version of it.
Such a long time ago...
great great track, and sounds fresh as ever. Not much from the early 80's stands up as well as Soft Cell. How about the original Memorabilia? That would still work in a club, no danger. Years ahead of its time.
Great post!

BA - Germfree Adolecents great choice and what an overlooked nugget that X-Ray's album is

marvelous dearie just marvelous. a list to live by round here.
it took me a while to work out all the hows and whats of getting tunes on dusty7s but in the end it was hello stranger by barbara lewis that set things rolling and it may well still be the best thing on there
x
That's a great photo.
Also: It's a fantastic track isn't it?
My first track I blogged was Midget Submarine by Swell Maps. I used to know Epic Soundtracks back in the day. That song is astonishingly good, but they never really did anything that good again. Actually I loved it so much, I blogged it twice, as I remember.
Ahem, rather embarrassingly now,
if you scroll down the link page here to 18 Jul 2005

you will find a kind of er similar theme of 'My First ....-...'
Hope it doesn't offend the meek and mild!
Sorry that's a Jul 05 archive from

Ally - I'll be over later to dig out that Barbara Lewis tune if it's still onboard.
RE - Isn't it just? What a tune, I don't know The Swell Maps - I think I always got them mixed up with A Certain Ratio (did they were raincoats?)
DVD - *does theatrical Tom and Jerry gulp* Please don't tell me she mimed along to sax solo while doing the honours *goes cross eyed and faints*
That's hilarious PM. I suspect I was looking the other way.
Played like a true Brit DVD, and it would only have put you off your stroke looking like she's hooting and a'honking while giving it 'eyes down for a full house'
Quite, dear boy. Manners maketh the man.
However, following the sax solo, I may have, rather rudely, fallen asleep before I could .. 'enforce the follow on'.
Remember that Kinks lyric where he 'took her to the regatta ... cos he was dying to get-at-her' ?
I love Soft Cell... it's great to know where your inspiration came from!
Have you got 'Non Stop' the first album - it's treat from end to end, and loaded with extras if you get the CD. Watch out for more 80s related bits and bobs tomorrow
