Keeping It Peel: Podrophenia 11 - Sound-a-likes (and a Pop Quiz)

Organized and arranged by Webbie from the Football and Music blog, The John Peel memorial day Keeping It Peel blazes it's way across the blogs today. Piley and I are chipping into the days doings with Podrophenia 11: Sound-a-likes is the theme so, expect an ear-opening, eye-popping playlist of lifted riffs, recycled styles, stolen vocal tones and even own brand versions of bigger bands.

With a playlist featuring some of Peel's favourites and Peely peeves, you can grab and stream below - or take away via iTunes..

Podrophenia 11

It's a Pop Quiz - we didn't have the space to fit this comp into the Poddy, so have a punt here pop pickers. Seven snippets of sound-a-like licks and riffs. I'll give 1 point for spotting the original riff and 1 point for the rip off . A total of 14 points to be bagged then: but how many can you manage? Be warned, it's a bit nippy, so you may need to replay a few times

Once you've lent an ear here - why not zip about the blogs and see what other Peely treats are on offer. The list of participating sites can be found here...

Cheers Webbie - we've got some ideas for next year: session only tunes, live tracks and songs bought after hearing on JP

Lovely job. Though I've posted the full, even more ludicrous Bollock Brothers story over on Piley's blog.

And that bloke should have SUED David Bowie's Thin White Arse. Outrageous!

If you can scrape up a track by 80s local Bauahus-a-like band 'Vane' for the next one, I will start a new religion with you and Piley as Chief Gods.

They're not ringing any bells - ISB, however I'll dig about in the vaults and this site will be the place for anecdotal info. Vane are probably the sort of group we would have gigged/crossed paths with in my band days.

Wow, I was just thinking about you today... I just subscribed to Podrophenia so I can catch up. It's good to see Planet Mondo is still alive and well :-)

Peace and blessings.

Just listened to the podcast this morning - fab stuff as usual.

What's the name of that last track you played? The world music tune with the Rod Stewart rip-off chorus? I didn't quite catch it, but I need to obtain a copy!!!

Mondo said...

Whoops - forget to mention that. It's Taj Mahal by Jorge Ben . If you take that chorus, and mix it with groove of Miss You by the Stones (Sexy was written as response to this) - you've got Rod's disco hit

Jorge Benn! I should have been able to guess that one.

Also loved that Damned track. Have added Strawberries to the growing wishlist. I wish they sold that kind of LP in charity shops!

I could bang on about Strawberries for hours. It's such a gem, you can try another tune here
and this is just gorgeous Under The Floor Again. with one of the most majestic guitar solos ever..

The Black Album is also worth putting in your basket. While The Clash were parading as their musical idols, and the Pistols had imploded. The Damned were doing a double album exporing prog (Curtain Call a 16 minute epic), psych, proto-goth, pop and soundtracks. Always consistent, their last two albums are absolute knockouts..

They really are the great lost punk band - I'm so tempted to write a biog of them

Just been listening to Strawberries on Spotify this afternoon - it's great!

And write that bio Mondo!
