Dixieland, that's where he was born, early Lord one frosty morning
Elvis actual birth certificate - photo by me
Elvis' death was my JFK assassination moment. I remember precisely where I was when the news was first whispered around the room - at my paternal Aunt Shirley's, well her ladies hairdressing salon in Salisbury (the glamour!). It was like being caught in a morbid tornado hearing this omnipresent superstar had faded, flat-lined and was now, gone forever.
Although I was too young catch the sonic boom of his Rock 'n' Roll years - the aftershock of Elvisness was still resonating in my era - the seventies. His films were repeated in the schedules during the summer holidays, record shops and department stores had endless variations of compilation albums (Separate Ways was a standard) in the racks (including budget tribute LPs - 'insert name here' sings Elvis). Regular radio play for hits from the fifties to the seventies, while Live via Satellite gave a white-suited Elvis the aura of a rock 'n' roll astronaut.
But more than this, his influence was at the core of popular culture: from ginger quiffed, crepe-booted Teddy Boys to prime-time impressionists - whether comic (Freddy Starr) or musical (Alvin Stardust, Cliff, Les Gray) and any number of white suited popsters The Osmonds, showaddywaddy, The Rubettes. At the more respectable end of R.O.C.K Bryan Ferry and Bowie both lent heavily on Elvis' legacy...
An indicator of Presley-power is: long before I had any real awareness of The Beatles, Stones or in fact who any of Rock's heavy-hitters were - Elvis seemed - to me anyway - like an untouchable international idol with a seemingly god-like presence and super-hero stature, revered across the world - while other rock and rollers had come, copied, gone or been forgotten. For perspective, thumb through David E. Stanley's The Elvis Encyclopedia and you'll find Clapton and Led Zeppelin desperate to get an audience with Elvis..
Should you (and you really should, as it's his 80th birthday this year) fancy coming as close as possible to The King, book yourself a trip to Elvis at the 02. It houses the largest collection of Elvis' items ever to appear in the UK, all imported from Graceland and overseen by Priscilla Presley.
Items that include.....
But for the essence of Elvis - this outtake is the key to his magic as I wrote a few years back..
' While the offstage boffins were making technical tweaks and possibly 'checking levels' between takes, Elvis asks for his guitar, kicks off the riff for 'Baby What You Want Me To Do' the orchestra jump in, start jamming and the audience go wild'

A defining performance is, of course the 68 Special - where you could lucky dip any clip for pure-brewed musical-boom. Although this medley, with Elvis in full flight, revisiting his Rock 'n' Roll back catalogue with a renewed and unrelenting energy is explosive.

Moshrophenia
Photos by Paul Hughes
What a wingding. What a Shakedown. What a tear-up. An evening of triple win amazingness was had by Howling Black Soul Dr X , The Ends - and the Railway's assembled drinkers and dancers. As Piley says it was like having three headliners.
Huge salutes due to everyone who played, danced and drank and Duncan on the desk for the wall of sound..
Howling Black Soul were majestic. Their album is already one of Podrophenia's highlights of the year, but live they somehow even outdid that! Incredible sound, proper R.O.C.K vocals!
Leicester's Dr. X were playing their first ever show in Southend (possibly Essex, maybe the South in general!), and what a treat it was. Mesmerising seeing them create such a amazing sound from home made, hand-crafted instruments, ingenious! Loads of great feedback on them during the rest of the evening and the CDs seemed to be selling well too!
And The Ends? They are like an incendiary bomb going off! A sonic boom of unrelenting energy . Power-pop punk tunes, super-chargedstage presence, and an electric bunch of musicians.
And behold our first moshpit - so lively that even lead Mike dived in! .Southend rocks..
And watch out for the large format poster of the Ends new single sleeve (and vinyl debut) out on Podrophenia Records in 2015
Hurrah, hats aloft and here's to the next five years

A live masterclass on blues harmonica from Steve West Weston and Martin McNeill in the latest Podrophenia..
In five years of Podrophenia, there haven't been many occasions (read:none), when all of us behind the tech desk have been stunned into silence and goose pimples - but last Thursday, Steve's rendition of Summertime, was a moment when the room faded away and we became lost in a deep blue dream...
Press play and behold the genius of Steve Weston accompanied by Martin McNeill on guitar.
Should you fancy grabbing all six tracks recorded during Steve and Martin's Podrophonic session, grab the full length podcast below. You'll also hear both of our guests discussing influences, early records bough and with work other artists (Wilko, Eddie and The Hot Rods, Roger Daltrey, Dr Feelgood, Digby Fairweather) ..
From Piley and self, we pitch in a run of ' Letter U' themed tracks - including Lowell Fulson and Henry Gray unreleased instrumentals, so rare they're not even titled..
Two hours of tunes, chat and pure-brewed blues all here for free...
Or via iTunes...

As heard on Wilko Johnson's last album, Steve 'West' Weston - is live in session on Radio Podrophenia tonight
If you've read about, rambled your way to or rocked and rolled at one the Railway Hotel's, blues-blasting Sunday Sessions, there's a strong probability you'll have beheld the double-barrel combo of Martin McNeill on guitar, and West Weston on harp..
Both players are Grand Masters of their musical medium, and regular fixtures on the Essex/London blues scene. In the past week - Martin shared a bill and stage with the 81 year old Mississippi ledge Leo Bud Welch.. While West has completed a European tour with Mud Morganfield (Muddy Waters son) including two nights at Ronnie Scott's. Earlier in the year he added his signature sound to Wilko Johnson/Roger Daltrey - which followed on from his previous work with Dr Feelgood..
So rewire your dials to Podrophenia tonight as Martin and West join us live in the SFOB studio from 8pm. A wing-ding is guaranteed for all...
For a taste test of what's a'popping tonight - tune in below..

Sunday Sessions: Bank Holiday Hoedown and a free CD
It's that time of the month, when Martin McNeill and The Bottletop Blues Band return for their Sunday residency at Southend's Railway Hotel. Having said that, Martin, JJ (bass), Steve Weston (keys/harmonica) , Roy Webber (drums) - were in for an improv gig last Tuesday - where I even managed to jump on (bass) for a jam 'n' run around on this Gatemouth groover
So ready your dancing legs as it's bound to be a bank holiday blast with a similar swish to this recent session
I'm in from four spinning the tunes - with Big Bo (below) possibly popping up on the playlist. And early birds behold: I'll be bringing in a few copies of an all new comp' Rocking at The Railway packed with floor-shakers and faves from our Sunday Sessions...

Can you find all four Fabs hidden in the pic
From today through to Sunday it's a three way whammy of music, gigging and disc-spinning.....
Friday: the long-awaited wedding of Southend pals Su and Jack, with a reception at The Railway. Stomping, shaking and shindigging will be taking place from 2pm through to who-knows-when? musically there'll be a selection of live music from local talent and (larger than local) legends. I'll be on the decks (and possibly on bass for a bit) pinging in an improv playlist of soul, funk and old nuggets and new treasures...
Saturday: National Record Store Day and a medley of local DJs Daryl Easlea, Curly Dan (pictured above), Beardy Al, Prof Andrew Branch of the Middle Age Spreaders and Podrophonic representation from myself are all parking up at Fives in Leigh Broadway, rotating actual vinyl records instore from 8 - 3. With live music from Hannah Marsh and Tom Burgess. A Dansette Disco we're calling it with double decking of these portable players. One on loan from home.
Sunday: Britain's premium harmonica player - West Weston returns to The Railway for a rare home town gig with his band The Bluesonics. West's last blast brought out the full roll call of Southend's Rock Aristocracy. Assorted Feelgoods, Hot Rods, Tonight and Lew Lewis... I'll behind the bar doing tunes between the bands...

The Sunday Sessions - Wilko approved and with added Digby
Martin McNeill and the Bottletop Blues Band will be blazing away from 4 today at Southend's most rock 'n' roll local and epicentre of the swelling scene.. The Railway Hotel
Expect a jazz spin on this Sunday's swing-ding as legendary trumpeteer Digby Fairweather is aboard as the special guest
But don't just take my word for what hot-rocking heat Martin McNeill and pal's generate - they're rubber stamped 'approved' by Wilko Johnson - who, in our just published interview (more on that later) had this to say...
They're a bloody good band. The whole of the band is really good - they're playing proper blues, which is quite a rare thing. The whole band is good - rhythm section, guitar - and the man himself.
And I couldn't let the death of the blackest of mambas go unmarked - so expect to hear..
