Funky Friday - Freak Out

This post is dedicated to the memory of John Martyn - RIP JM

Hairy-headed, heavy-loaded, underground funk is the mood of today's FF,three walloping slabs of post-psych-freak-rock, where you can almost waft away the patchouli and incense, smell the embers slow-burning the rug, and watch the Robert Crumb or Che poster a'peeling from the smoke stained walls.

I know nothing about Colosseum apart from...

Sometimes they are classified as Jazz Rock
At other times they are classified as Art Rock
Fatboy Slim sampled The Kettle for something or other

Colosseum - The Kettle

Manfred Mann Chapter Three

Yes that Manfred Mann, but sounding eerily like a proto Charlatans

Manfred Mann - One Way Glass

And Aphrodite's Child featuring the monumental man-mass and heavyweight of light enterainment Demis Roussos and Prog-God Vangelis hammering the Hammond

Aphrodite's Child - Magic Mirror

If you're in the mood for more fuggy-fruggery then check out Andy Votel's Vertigo Mixed.A comp of head spinning mixing and artful editing, swirling with rocking oddities and obscurities, so good, I've never quite got to the end - it's like a guitar version of Too Many DJs

Or, why not lend an ear to Marco Pirroni's hand picked Glam Prog favourite, and a tune that inspired his signature guitar twang - it's right here...

And finally something for your third eye.. 'Tonite Let's All Make Love In London'

I posted some comments on Channel Mondo so I won't repeat myself here. I really didn't know who he was. Your post, which I thought was very warm and heartfelt, has inspired me to check him out.

Love it. Can't get enough of Aphrodites Child!

You're right about the Vertigo comp, it is a killer mix - especially the first half.

And I'm sure I've drivelled on about it before but Strange Pleasures is a top collection, although not quite as funky:

Thanks Keith it's well worth checking out John Martyn (mainly his 70s period albums) Solid Air or Bless The Weather are probably the best starting points..

I had my hand on that Strange Pleasures comp in Rough Trade a couple of days ago Cocktails- but went for The Who Sell Out at £3.29, my brother bought this - what a belter ..

There you go DD I knew these nuggets would be right up your rock 'n' roll boulevard - and I really am almost done with that mix for you

Mmm, that CD does look good. More stuff to get!

You should get onto that Strange Pleasures box quick if you want to copy - the last one's hard to come by now.

I'm back at Rough Trade next week I'll pick it up then, PS you can't go wrong with this for a fiver..

Have you been to see (what feels like) my 60s vinyl dealer at Spitalfields Markets? He's there Wed - Friday usually and has a very, very good range of 60s/psych/mod CDs and vinyl and A LOT of expertise if you want a lunchtime chat!

Spooky I was at Spitalfields yesterday (trying on Fred Perry zip ups), and browsing the vinyl - there used to be a stall near Leons - baldy bloke with glasses who had a great selection(mostly CD) of Studio One and funky comps - I'll try and track your dealer down next week when I'm over there - bet they've sold the zip up I tried but didn't buy though..

He's well worth tracking down - look out for the older guy with the silvery hair in the main part of the market.

Killer selection of cuts, PM. You've single-handedly rescued what had been shaping to be a really nasty day.

I'll keep an eye next time I'm there Cocktails - thanks for the tip..
