Podrophenia - 12: Local Heroes/Southend Rocks

He discovered Donovan and produced Crocheted Doughnut Ring (see below) - but who is he? Find out in Podrophenia 12...

Dr Feelgood, Depeche Mode, The Horrors and My Life Story are just a few of the local legends appearing on the playlist for the latest Podrophenia as Piley and I Celebrate Southenders, local slebs and sea-siders  - casting our net from next door neighbours to neighbouring boroughs no more than five miles away. There's all the usual babble, rabbit and jabber covering: late night burger vans, local  venues, celibacy, the secret of Wilko Johnson's suits and which one of us was once a Video Man?

Loved it. I wasn't at the Depeche Croc's show, but had seen them a couple of weeks before at the Regency in Chadwell Heath, where if anything they sounded even worse. Dave Gahan's voice really needed a massive smack habit before it became listenable. And I can't help you with the identity of the mysterious 'Ivan' ( I wasn't THAT 'well known around the scene', you know). Though he sounds Terrible.

And you've cured me of my need to visit Canvey Island. We'd planned a little pilgrimage for spring...

I think you've got the makings of a short film in the Video Man Diaries. Get going on a screenplay!

Ivan mystery is resolved now - Choco who went to college with Dave Gahan and was another Crocs-goer (does that sound wrong?) at this time - you may have even crossed paths - says 'Ivan was their mate who did fashion and probably made some of their clothes: most prob him:'

Canvey - best to view it like visting a safari park: keep your doors and windows closed, don't feed the animals or stop for a picnic

Ps mail you about some Carl related news on LOTR

Love your comment about Canvey Island....perfecto ! Made me laugh out loud :O) Is there still a zoo in Vange ?

Mondo said...

Are you/were you a local then Cusp?

I think the zoo closed last year - animal campaigners had been trying to get it shut for years though. There was also some bizarre place near Crays Hill that kept lions, I remember getting the 251 from Billericay to Southend, looking out of the top deck and seeing blooming lions in the south Essex wilderness!!

BTW The bloke in the pic' is Peter Eden, used to run a record shop on the London road - but bit of music scene player in the sixties

Left an extended comment over at Pileys Mondo. Good work fella really enjoyed this one mate.

P.S. Depeche Mode , weedy sound or what ?. I never liked em back then and i agree that the "smack" years were better , much more omph !!!.

Top Podcast Mondo, cheered me through the first section of a long horrible day at work. You coughed so much that I think I might have caught your cold. Crochet Doughnut Ring are a bit of find, I'll have to pick up a copy of that Eden compilation.

By the way did I hear you wrong or did you say that Basildon was only 5 miles from Southend? Oh and that Weekenders track sounded woeful, sorry. I liked them at the time more for the fact that it was Tall Pumpkin. Great show though, and I'm glad The Golden Section got a shout. Canvey sounds worse than ever.

Ah well, I was kind of local -- not now -- and had family in Southend, Leigh, Ingatestone and Billericay. Now you mention the lions I remember them too and there was a chap who had a lion (alive) in a big cage in the garden near Brentwood when I was little in 60s. You could see it from the road. We didnt pass often but with a few months' gap the lion was gone. The next time wwe passed (few months further) it was back...but stuffed in a glass case on the porch :O)

I was never really a fan either Carl but had to include this as a tribute us all being Crocs/Toothbrushers and that.

Bit of a hack attack wasn't it Gary, but keeps it feeling 'live'(ish) ..Bloke in the pic atop the page is Peter Eden - him of the second hand record shop near Carmel...

Yes 5 miles (not far enough some say). Did you ever hear/see Paul T's first band The Ladykillers with me on guitar?

'Mazing my parents had a newsagents in Billericay all through the 80s Cusp. Piley almost included Billericay Dickie in the poddy but we thought it may be a bit obvious. I learnt to drive in Brentwood

Never saw Th' Ladykillers (too young), I was born in 72, so I would have been about 15 I'm guessing.

Mondo said...

Yeah first gig 85 I think, so yeah probably bit young - tapes, vid and photos are available, but buried and need the thumbs up from Tunks before putting in the public domain...

The pic of Pete Eden is a cracker - may be a trick of the light, but he seemed to have a much longer head back in the day! It was the 60's though...

Mondo said...

And don't forget he was also musical director and drummer for the Animal Kwackers too (Rory, Rory - tell us a story etc...)

Half way through listening to the latest podcast. A cracker as usual - although have to agree that the Depeche track is desparately weedy.

What's the next theme then and don't make us wait so long!

I should add that I had to stop listening shortly after posting this comment thanks to the podcast's 'inappropriate work content'. i.e. I started laughing at your musings on celibacy.

That track by The Records was great too - just up my street!

Mondo said...

Bless you Cocktails - covers should be the next one (hopefully late Feb/early March) - then perhaps something for April Fool's Day..

Dig about on Youtube and there's plenty more Records to be seen/heard. This one's a peachy treat...wait for the chorus.

Still not clear on the celibacy rules....I'll have to check how strict the rules of this self enforced 'dry spell' are

PS check the Mozza vid above and that is yer actual Golden Disc
