New York here we come. Back in 7 days....

Perhaps it sounds daft - but, I've been on an electrical nutty buzz for New York ever since seeing Roy Castle trumpeting a Record Breakers New York special - (around 74-ish) which, fanfared it's arrival by way of the Bernstein tune below. The scale, the scope and giddy-swirl of this sparkling zippy city, beamed mid-week(probably halfday closing too) into a compressed Essex maisonette, birthed a  nutty buzz that became compounded by Kojak's opening titles, the Batman TV series, endless re-reads of  Spider-Man/Marvel ..and of course Taxi Driver, Saturday Night Fever, Bowery-based punk and on and on and on.

A List/itinerary has been heavily prepared for our trip. It includes Top of the Rock (photo above), Empire State, Grand Central Station, SoHo, West Village, the Highline, Central Park, Brooklyn and, an infinite list of deli's, bagel bars and pizza places...

So, I'll see you in seven days or thereabouts and leave you with last Tuesday's Podrophenia, featuring a live acoustic session from special guest and former The Shopkeeper Appeared artist - Andy J Gallagher..

Cheers Davy will do - is it your first visit? It's our first visit.

One little gem I've found that's nowhere to be seen in the guide books is the East River Ferry - a commuter ferry sailing down East River calling at Long Island, Brooklyn (uptown and downtown), Wall St and Governor's Island

$4 for a one way trip to any stop - $12 for a hop on hop off ticket!

2nd. But myfirst was 25 years ago!

And the Staten Island ferry gets you a bracing view of the harbour and Liberty, etc for a fraction of the price of the tourist boats.

Top tip - it's in The Itinerary, where are you staying for your trip?

I've forgotten the name of the place but it's one of the posh 1930s hotels in Manhattan - someone else is paying!

Oh here we go, this one. Last time I was there I stayed at The Chelsea Student Hostel. It was full of backpackers and they had a communal kitchen where you could cook up a tin of beans.

Have a good one. Try and get to The Village Vanguard or Joe's Pub. And The White Horse Inn. And Ben's. And Liberty Island...

The best tip I can give is...walk as much as possible! You'll see a million little movies going on out in the streets and, if you're like me, you'll have your own soundtrack going on in your head! Also get out to Brooklyn for a slightly slower pace of life and some great views of Manhattan. Most of all, have fun!

Ah, hope you're having the time of your lives as I write. New York has a very strange effect on me, as it's where I would have been born and raised had my Mum not put her foot down with my Dad about his plans to relocate the family back there. She said a firm 'no' to him, and I ended up growing up in Ilford instead! Forks in the road, eh?

Do try and get up the Empire State at twilight. Watching the city light up for the night is magical...
