Radio Podrophenia Winter Draws On...

Shipmates -  Podrophenia docks at Ship Full of Bombs, 8pm Southend Central time tonight. The theme for this seasonal edition is Winter:  Ice Hockey, Cold Winds, Cold Games, Icicles & Snow related songs are all in the forecast.

We'll be playing a bagful of winter mixtures - indie, funk, local music, new tunes and old faves.. And asking  what would you include in a hardback Podrophenia annual..

Tune in at SFOB or chat along with us at our Podrophonic board

Southend's newest groovers , Glass Brides will be on tonight's playlist - you can check out the full haul of their deeply, darkly, delicious nu trip-hop hereabouts or buy the Nature of the Beats EP for a very reasonably priced outlay here

I think we may be dedicating tonight's edition to the memory of Lewis Collins - another legend lost RIP

Happy Neu! Year

Happy New Year all you bloggers and browsers. Stepping softly and slowly into 2011, how about a couple of nicicles to add a frosted glaze to the goings on: two Teutonic tunes from art rockers Neu! - fitting the fluish, foggy mood of the mo'

The brisk, beaty and wintery instrumental of Isi (with an under-bubble of Deck the Halls) is something that soundtracked my slippery steps to the station and back during last January's drifts.

Neu! - Isi

Is it me or is there a touch of Dirk Wears White Sox meets Little Drummer Boy about Seeland

So far I've only got Neu! 75 - so any recommendations on where else to dip into the Krautrockers catalogue would be much appreciated

Snowbound Sounds

Yes it's a re-up as they say, but with good reason - I haven't had a chance to whisk together some new winter-drifters and fireside warmers yet- a playlist that would include Neu!, Ulrich Schnauss and Jon Hopkins - so whether your cosy-toes and tucked up in your pit, or like me, some poor gump schleping your way to work  (late start, early finish I reck') lend a reflective and frozen ear to this mix of frosty favourites..you know where to find the T-list.

Dear Diary - January

Click on the pic for full size

I must get this in before the month's out. My old Radio 1 (275/285) 1979 calendar, found while lofting the Christmas bits. Bare-bones on entries and typo-heavy, it's mainly a record of discos and ice skating (a school trip to The Michael Sobell center if I remember). So, Shuggy Otis's Ice Cold Daydream seems an appropriate combo of the two

Shuggy Otis - Ice Cold Daydream

January 2010 may have been the coldest since records blah, blah, blah... but 79 and The Winter of Discontent wasn't shy of ice, snow doom and gloom either.

Countdown To Christmas - Ho, Ho, Ho-down

The spirit of the season and a Christmas tingle finally took hold over the weekend. Fired by a medley of : the New York Dolls tinsel, glam and glitter at Friday's gig - how loud? Choco Girl popping by with homemade cards and crocheted tree trims. Piley, Coops and Marmite dropping round to record the Christmas podcast. A trip to my favourite pub decked out in festive finery and a rewatch of Scrooged starring NY Doll David Johansen as the cab-driving, stogie-chewing Ghost of Christmas past. All lit by a low-lying golden December sunlight.

All of which means it’s time to unwrap some winter warmers and set the yule blog ablaze by way of a blugrass shinding on Christmas Time's A Comin, and a ragtime tear-up on the jolliest, jauntiest version of Here Comes Santa Claus

Oh and the newly remastered It's A Wonderful Life has been bought and tucked away for a closer-to-Christmas treat..

Lazy Sunday - Last Of The Winter Mixtures

Photo by Bleech - he's in today's Observer you know

So as this year's chill begins to fizzle, perhaps it's time to take a reflective look at that was the winter that was - by way of a mix that's perhaps more downtempo, frosted - and some may even stretch to bleak, than the usual mondo mania. With a collection of cool jewels and crystal melts, from mainly Northern European icy climes.. Get Carter(Newcastle), Serge, Yves Montand and Air (France) John Martyn (Scotland), Baltic Fleet (Liverpool) and Stina Nordenstam (Sweden) ...threaded together by a motif of movment and travel - which I'd like to claim was planned, but in truth, is entirely random...

Last Of The Winter Mixtures

Roy Budd - Carter Takes A Train
John Martyn - Smiling Stranger
Yves Montand - Pour Faire le Portrait d´un Oiseau
Serge Gainsbourg - Melody
Minnie Riperton - Take A Little Trip
Dennis Hoppers Choppers - Ballad Of Fu Manchu and The Red Bride
Harsh Reality - How Do You Feel
Money Mark - Cry
Gather Round Children - Yoko In Idaho (Sufjan Stevens and Beatles mashup)
The Beatles - Flying
Stina Nordenstam - On Falling
Air - Soldissimo
Ian Brown - F.E.A.R
Easy All Stars - Karma Police
Baltic Fleet - 48 Hour Drive (Boston)
Boards Of Canada - Dayvan Cowboy

Covered Up

In me pit all cozy-like, that's where I'd like to be today. Tucked up and having a lazy lay in, perhaps nipping off to our favourite fry up merchants round the corner (fried egg sandwich and chips, is my favoured munch of the moment).

But the good people at C2C made sure the trains kept a-rollin', and the Fenchurch Flyer services were almost unaffected by any snowy closures or problems with 'points', 'signals', 'overhead lines' or any other train-tech talk..*cue quiet nashing of teeth*

So it'll be a virtual duvet day with these kooky covers acting as a wintery warmer

The Lion Sleeps Tonight - Brian Eno

I'm Partial To Your Abracadabra - Paul McCartney

I was very tempted to post Train Kept A-Rollin, but we've had enough rowdy rock 'n' roll racket recently..
