L is For....
Led Zep (a BBC recording rarity), Little Richard a Roxy album track and Lulu - but which Lulu to choose? Feeling Alright, Watch That Man or Morning Dew?
Last week's radio runout didn't manage to lift off the launch pad - due to a last minute tech meltdown, so refreshed and re-revved after an unexpected Tuesday night off - Piley and I are back in bunker from 9 tonight at Chance Radio - why not swing by and listen live.
Divvyshare upload problems seem to be over - so as promised a take away versh of last Friday's funky nugget

Pop Quiz - Carry on Loving..
Live from 9 - tonight's Radio Podrophenia is pitched around the themes of ' Love and Hate'. Expect a few smoochy(ish) doings from The Sonic Executive Sessions, The Sonics, a Supremes instrumental rarity , a tune titled after this Carry On film - and a mystery artist. Along with handful of angry songs sung to you by Gil Scott Heron and Southend premier punk legends The Machines.
One track almost popped into my Tuesday night hamper was this full and fruity number from another mystery artist - but who is it geting himself into a cross-eyed tizzy.

Podrophenia TV
Pull up a seat, ready your remote and focus your peepers as Piley and I unravel the big red ribbon wrapped around our new Youtube channel Podrophenia TV.
Last year Roman Jugg and Darren Jones joined Piley and myself in our Tuesday night bunker for some close mic'd acoustic sessions, which (with thanks to Phil Hubbard) have been recorded, rendered and uploaded to Channel P. So what's on the viewing information..
Roman Jugg gives us an acoustic version of The Damned's obscure single-only release 'Lovely Money' - refitting it as a stripped down Ray Davies unplugged piece- (or is that unjugged). With the Viv Stanshall spoken word section being taken up by Piley and the other one.
And local lad and Oil City dweller Darren Jones - pitches in with 3 self compositions from the first of his two acoustic sets
We'll update and upload as more Podrophonic sessions happen - (and more are planned)
But for now turn on, tune in and tell a pal.

H is For....
Bowie's barnets - missing the classic T J Newton do though
Happy 65th birthday (belatedly) to ol' blue/brown eyes himself David Bowie - continuing with the riff of H, what a run of great haircuts he's paraded through the ages..
Why H? Because tonight we unwrap chapter 8 of the Podrophonic Alphabet. The hooting-tooting harmonica honking of Wes Weston. Happiness (the Pursuit of) and a funky Monkees cover from Hubert Laws and his Royal Bowieness are amongst a handful of the hits and highlights you can expect to hear live from 9 on tonight's Radio Podrophenia. Where Piley and I are joined in the bunker by King of the Jingles - Phil Hubbard.
Tune your ears and internet to Chance Radio from 9..

between 1 and 2 on Saturday here...
I'm on my hol's this week - at home. Well, half term innit? so not much time for the usual bloggings and banterings.
Being in lazy blogger mode, I'm going to play the occasional Re-up card and pitch in a couple o' home-made comps you may have missed. Two acoustic autumnal mixes of slow burning smokey smoulderers..
It's back to all the regulation rattling and rambling next week

London's Grooviest Boutique - Mrs Jones Emporium.
Rock Chic is the vibe at Fee Doran's newly re-housed glam-grotto. Originally occupying a fifth floor space Clerkenwell way - Mrs Jones new lodgings, currently parked up along Hackney Road, are Mr Benn goes Bowie at Kensington Market. Housed in a glittering club-house where handmade one-offs are racked and stacked alongside a set-dressing of black sprayed mirror balls, the coolest cult collectables and an assortment of sparkles, spangles and funkily feather-cut numbers. All of which make a visiting the emporium feel like a rummage around Eno's Warm Jets era wardrobe..
Stylistically Fee Doran's designs trace a line from the Wonder Workshop and Biba's widescreen scene via Mr Freedom and Alkasura to Roxy Music meets Worlds End. Dig about the Mrs J website and you'll find a client list that reads like a Burke's Peerage of the glossily trendy gentry - Kylie, Goldfrapp, Scissor Sisters, Madonna. Dig about the multi-coloured pop shop's stock, and bespoke bits or unique 'pop star droppings' are yours for the bagging.
Mrs Jones Emporium can be found 49 Hackney Road, E2....Mrs Jones can be found on the web and Twitter..
A tune that seems to match the mood of Mrs J's is this Roxy rarity.
Rarity rating being: a Peel session (4th Jan 1972) from before the band signed to Island and featuring Davy O’List on guitar and Graham Simpson doing bass duties
Roxy Music - Re-Make Re-Model
Yes true believers all you see below - are Mrs J's creations...

Dear Diary:1980 - April
April 1980 comes with a handful of calendar conundrums.....
Which era did ITV's Hollywood series cover (finished on the 1st)? I seem to remember it being the just silent/Sennett/slapstick age - but this may be because of a tie-in Harold Lloyd poster still in the loft.
Pelican Tennis (5th) - rings an unanswered bell
But 'snake, pub, fair' (13th) ? Not a clue!
Sinclair (9th) was the local bobby on the beat. A 'Mr Nasty' cut of copper, famously quick with his clips and fists, who on this occasion took to throwing me around the rose gardens (mostly trees and holly bushes in reality) by the throat - simply because he thought I was 'smirking'. Perhaps my God Save the Queen tee rattled him, or that we'd sometimes sing the Batman theme as he went barreling by on his boneshaker bike with the wind catching and flapping his cape.
'Gillow hit on head by roll' (22nd) could be where some sparky type threw a jam roll out of the school changing room windows, bouncing off of Andrea Gillow's noggin, only for a second sarney to land squarely on the head of a passing PE teacher. Whoops..class detention for that one (at lunchtime too - grrrr)
And it must be spring as local temptress LOTR seems to to be presenting again (18th)!
Singles added to the collection are: Devo, the Cockney Rejects brand of boot-boy of Oi and The Undertones. As a variant I'll post a lesser heard versh of My Perfect Cousin
The Undertones - My Perfect Cousin (demo)
Chartwise the top 75 is as Randomland as ever - 10 to 20 being a cross generational peppering of pop.And the albums *goes cross-eyed* John Cooper Clarke neighboring up with Martie Webb. And where did Bobby Vee come from!
Top 75 singles

12 x 12: Going down in the subway
Sticking with a London-ish theme, we're going underground by way of a lower league release (peaking at a chart position of 24) from Soft Cell
Bedsitter, Torch, Say Hello 12“ers were all retweaked with excellent extended interludes and additions, but rather than pitch in with one of the biggie singles which seem to be fairly well represented around and about the blogs, thought it may be worth revisiting this overlooked oddity..
Soft Cell - Down in the Subway (12" Remix}
Surprisingly, I haven't flipped the single and tried the cover of Johnny Thunders - Born To Lose. Yet! The Cell's Subway vid can be viewed here: wherein Marc Almond sleazes about in a leather cap and a tache free but freshly crimped Dave Ball stands static throughout...
Like Tainted and What before - Subway was another northern cover and if you've never heard it - Jack Hammer's original mod stomper is well worth a wallop

12 x 12: I don't need this pressure Ron
To round off our run of 80s retromania - I'm pitching in two tricky-to-track down 12"ers, both of which I believe are still unavailable in a digital format..
Until they started punting out a run of soapy soul from True onwards - Schpandau Ballet (as Tommy Vance inisted on calling them) were achingly hip and always several beats ahead of the trend-pretenders: kilts, black leather, checks and corduroy - literally new looks for every release..without the assisted swish of a stylist...
So two curiosities from the catalogue then..
Spandau Ballet - Chant No 1(Remix) *offline temporarily*
A Richard James Burgess remix (that'll be him from Landscape) found only on the flipside of the Instinction 12" or the Diamond box set, more on that in a mo' - one of the few alt-versions I remember hearing in a club and sounding impossibly now-wave (see also ABC's white label, the Human League's Love and Dancing mix of Love Action and most Soft Cell 12"-ers)
Spandau Ballet - Paint Me Down (Remix)*offline temporarily*
Again heard in the same club (Zero 6) and almost impossible to find until getting a limited release on the Diamond Album box set - where all 8 album tracks were given the extended remix treatment and pressed on 4 x 12" singles
Finally a spin of the under-played poppet that is...

12 x 12: When your world is full of strange arrangements
And there's no stranger arrangement than this semi-official, white label Look of Love twelve inch. Trevor Horn - the Joe 90 of pop production - punches every programme on the rinse 'n' spin remix machine: backward loops, varispeed vocals and Fairlight slams make this something of a pop curiosity from the ABC catalogue. Although the whirring blur and boom-box beats all pull tidily into place by the closing coda.
ABC - Look of Love 12" (Special Remix) *offline temporarily*
A Merchant Banker Bonus
I’ve seen the future, I can’t afford it.
Yuppiedom and Sloanies come full circle. With the Blue Meanies in office, tax hikes, library closures, charity snatching and the privatisation of forests (oi Cameron get off our land) and billion pound banker bonuses - this undervalued tune fits the mood of the moment perfectly
ABC - How To Be A Millionaire 12" (Wall St Mix ) *offline temporarily*
The regulation 7 inch edish, sounds like.....

Putting The Beat (Girl) in The Beatles...
Digging through the John Barry back catalogue I ran across his take (well the John Barry 7's take) of Watch Your Step...originally a Bobby Parker single that Lennon openly admitted was lifted and rejigged by The Fabs for I Feel Fine (more on that here). The Beatles shuffle 'n' bump arrangement is literally just a shade away from John Barry's Brit-Beat twist on the tune.
His first take appeared on The John Barry Sound EP, released just a year after the Beat Girl soundtrack, an album constructed from similar trebly Anglo-twangs and speedy hipster rhythms
Fast forward to 62, where The John Barry Orchestra re-oomphed Watch Your Step for Beat Girl star Adam Faith, an updated take flip-siding his Lonesome single. The opening note - an extended sax honk - is almost a pre-feedback version of The Beatles legendary intro.
Exhibits A (Adam) B (Barry) C (Cheeky Beatles) are below. Take 6 of I Feel Fine, the instrumental version, is the one to lend a quizzical ear to...
