Spring Breaks

It's that time of year to follow the migration patterns of gnarly hippies and frazzled rockers through the ages  - and go green and escape to the country..

After a last minute spin to cobbled and cosy Medieval Rye last summer, we're itching for a revisit to sunny Stow on the Wold. Our 12th visit, has been booked, and we'll be rolling around the wolds for a while. Albums packed in the holiday hamper include newbies from  Sharon Jones, the Len Price 3 and Beck

But before we pack up and ping off - I'll be spinning in a few tunes at The Railway tonight, around Oil City Rollers - Bif Bam Pow booming out their Thames Delta R 'n B and Estuary boogie...

Expect this freshly pressed retro-groover from the House of Blow Up to make an appearance during the wing-ding..

While I'm away - I'll re-plant a spring mix from backawhiles..

The Planet Mondo Annual 2013

Boys, girls, inbetweeners and whatnots - here for your listening ears and grooving legs is the Planet Mondo Annual 2013, prepared for the festive Sadlads CD meetup of Piley, E F Rice, Jack Gestures, Paul Glasses and self. To recap on the rules....

1. Circulate to everyone a CD no longer than 80 minutes in length, containing tracks for new groups you have either got into for the first time this year or established artists you have perhaps picked up an old track/album for this year.

2. You may have more than one track for an artist on the CD (although 80 mins of Springsteen would be pushing it)

3. You supply all those taking part with a CD including a full track listing.

So what has 2013 pitched into my PM playlist?

Beard Rock - Kadaver

Nu Blues - The Strypes. Barrence Whitfield & the Savages

Local talent - Eight Rounds Rapid, David Woodcock. Plantman, The Glass Brides

Newly sifted Soul gems - Lonnie Lester, The Dells. The Precisons

The full list is below, rendered as a screen shot to avoid those pesky DMCA types... click on the pic for the complete t-list

Planet Mondo Annual 2013

During the 70-ish minute mix - listen out for appearances from Steve Lamacq, Edith Bowman and Courtney Taylor-Taylor. The PM Annual back issues can be collected hereabouts - except the 2012 edition, which will be wing-dinging its way to us soon-ish

So until then have yourselves a rocking New Year, and perhaps use this mix for prepping music should you be Hootanannying or Hogmanaying it up tonight...

PS one on the subs bench - a Breaking Bad related beauty

The Annual Birthday Post

Yes it's that time of year again another 365 days older (or 366 on a leap year obvs). In previous outings we've covered ever-cherished soul favouritesteen nights out and even look a likes..

So by way of change,  thought this year could be the time to introduce a tick list of hits and highlights found over the past 12 months, by way of a 24 track a mix of mostly new tunes and a tail-end sprinkling of vingate bits - all of which were new my old ears this year.

A Re-up Harry

Photo by Markus Reeves who's down with us this weekend and will be in session between 1 and 2 on Saturday here...

I'm on my hol's this week - at home. Well, half term innit? so not much time for the usual bloggings and banterings.

Being in lazy blogger mode, I'm going to play the occasional Re-up card and pitch in a couple o' home-made comps you may have missed. Two acoustic autumnal mixes of slow burning smokey smoulderers..

It's back to all the regulation rattling and rambling next week

The Fantastic 4s: four go mild in Dorset and four years of bloggery....

Pop Quiz: Which Beatles Aunt relocated here ?

After a week on the lounge-a-bout at home, we're down to Dorset for a few days, on the Purbeck peninsula above to be exact. Brownsea Island, Dancing ledge, Studland Bay are all on the to do list - but any holiday hints and tips (or pubs) are aways welcome..

While we're zipping around and about doing The Only Way is Wessex, this online musical allotment breaks the four year blog-barrier..so to celebrate I've laid on a couple of musical buffets..Summer Shakedown volumes 1 and 2..(3 and 4 are here and here).

So, I'll see you for more of the usual in a week and bit. Or thereabouts..

Funky Friday - Summer Shakedown Volume 4

How's your luck! After boozing and booming through 3 CDs worth of home mades mixes last Saturday - heading steadily towards the leg-shaker and trouser-rattler that is Volume 4, when it's call finally came - 'No CD' was the unyielding,  naysaying display scrolling across the LCD of doom.

Ho, hum - oh well, at least the raw rooted tunes: R 'n' B, rock 'n' rollers and swinging mod stompers.. won't go to waste. We'll recycle and replay them here instead.

Tracklisting in the comms - vols 1 and 2 coming soon(ish)..

Funky Friday: A One off all-soul shakedown

Its been awhiles since we got on the good foot of a weekend. But as we're off to a summer shindig tomorrow night - a garden gathering of scoopy doings and fruity tunes which I've been asked to do the music for - it seems a fine time to fire up some Friday Funk for a one off.

In fact, it was one of these very same get-togethers that partially gave me the push to start sticking tunes into a cyberspace scrapbook, as a way of sharing several CDs worth of home-mixed music comps. Although as it turned out, only this 30 minute snippet has ever been blogged.

Anyhow - tomorrow's collections and compilations span almost 5 hours - give or take a track or two. CDs 1 and 2 tend towards the sunny sounds of Acid Jazz, Studio One, funky covers and world grooves. But set 3 is something strangely I've never pitched in with before - an all out soul-rollercoaster of vintage hits, new bits, covers, northern, Motown, garage, international and instrumental hip swishing funk.

The track-listing is in the comments to swerve a blog-whacking. So tomorrow think of us shaking a Saturday night leg, and perhaps I'll wing in the other 3 CDs during the summer season

Summer Shakedown Volume 3

You'll find a few of these scraps around and about on the blog if you're happy to dig a bit..

Snowbound Sounds

Yes it's a re-up as they say, but with good reason - I haven't had a chance to whisk together some new winter-drifters and fireside warmers yet- a playlist that would include Neu!, Ulrich Schnauss and Jon Hopkins - so whether your cosy-toes and tucked up in your pit, or like me, some poor gump schleping your way to work  (late start, early finish I reck') lend a reflective and frozen ear to this mix of frosty favourites..you know where to find the T-list.
