Surprisingly Disco

Osmo-disco

A tune that was this close to a spot in the last Podrophenia, comes from The Osmonds of all people, popping off a prime slice of discolicous doo-dah. Released in 1979 it sits alongside other light entertainers from this year (Johnny Mathis, Cliff, Barbara Streisand) who got on the good foot and boogied aboard the disco bandgwagon - PS - it's produced by Maurice Gibb

The Osmonds - I,I,I

And while we're thumbing through the section marked 'Unlikely Disco Biscuits' how about this from 77 - Cat Stevens dropping, beats, bleeps and barks in what's generally regarded as the earliest example of an electro track..

OK, that's definitely not what I would expect from Cat Stevens. It reminds me of some of the stuff off McCartney II (and Paul thought he was being groundbreaking - clearly not!)

Not bad is Ent - but the Osmo's go a bit Bon Jovi'sh on the chorus though

Of course Leo Sayer! Another light-footed light entertainer - how did over I look his disco turn Ally. We had the Greatest Hits (him in a tank top on the cover) at home..

It's more Atomic Dog than Cat Stevens isn't it Cocktails - have you heard Macca's Twin Freaks work, where he teams up with a DJ and remixer (I think Freelance Hellraiser) to mashup his own catalogue...well worth digging about for.

Great clips. I had never heard these. It was always cool to hear artists try to stay hip by hooking into whatever what the trend of the time.

Osmonds disco, not too bad (!)?? But Cat Stevens... it's just not right :) I love love Cat. Shouldn't have pressed 'play'.

Thank you so much for the kind words on my cousins band Mondo! Coming from a true music person like yourself it was completely appreciated.

I may use another out-of-character Osmonds tune in the next Podrophenia Keith - any guesses?

Played show 12 last night Axey - cheers' for the Piley and Mondo 'shout out' - that Rod track's a corker isn't it..

Bit bonkers isn't Gabbi - but worth logging in the blog if only for historical interest.. your cousins band are scorchio - I must check out their myspace page

Am I alone in finding the Cat strikingly similar to arcade game music circa 1982? Not sure I'd make it to Level 4.

Galaxia was my game of choice back then - preferably the pub table top type

ohh! VERY odd from the Cat man!! I'm quite a fan (I will be dropping one of his into the next poddy... not this one tho!), but this was, erm... odd, and 'Surprisingly Funky'!

Osmonds... I could live with them having one good tune, now it's doubled! By the end of the week i'll be liking puppy love...

Blimey!!! “The Osmonds” did disco? Well I never...
