Funky Friday - What Is Soul? This Is Soul!!

It had to be didn't it. After last week's post, there is only one album I could follow on with.

If you can't find the vinyl version (mine was just a mind-frying £3, from the Battlesbridge record man) you must grab the CD reissue. Lovingly packaged in dinky replica cover, complete with Atlantic logo liner, gatefold photo-spread and a walloping 17!! Yes 17!! extra tracks - including the delicous Barbra Lynn tune posted below. It's a must-have. In fact, just buy the bloomin' thing for the bonus bits anyway.

So, as we said at the start - what is soul? This is soul!!

Ben E.King - What Is Soul

Solomon Burke - Keep Looking

This was one of the first soul compilations I owned along with the Motown Hits of Gold series.

I loved this type of compilation because you would buy them for a certain couple of tracks and then you would always find something 100 times better which you had never heard before.

They were an education in themselves.

Damn you Mondo, ANOTHER album to get.

I do know that Barbara Lynn track though and I never imagined that it was her playing the guitar (assuming she's not faking in the clip that is).

Those Chartbuster albums are fab - and the metallic sleeves (vols 3 and 4) really are something special. That's exactly it about newbie tunes Drew and how I discovered these three nugg's.

Get both Cocktails - CD for the bonus bits. Vinyl for...well, the vinyl. Click here and it's all yours.

PS - she could be playing she's shaping some convincing bar chords around the one minute mark.

Hmm I have had this album for years. It really is great. Must dig it out and have another spin. Thanks for the reminder Dave.

was abit hacked off the other week in the market when a Bl**DY student with fancy haircut bagged a vinyl copy of this ! I tried to be grown up about it and say it was good for his education but I do hate him :)

Dig it and spin it Col - it sounds so warm on vinyl.

The bugger. It seems fairly available so you should be able to get your mitts on a copy BL. Have you tried the record man at Spitalfields?

Glad someone mentioned those Motown Chartbuster LPs. My first was Vol 3 and I'm sure it's no coincidence that it had that brilliant silver cover. CDs will never be able to compete with that.

Scorching Soul Comp - they've also got this at my local vinyl man Ally. Very tempted

I may spin a couple up from those sparkle sleeves at some point Mick

Motown Chartbusters Volume 3 with the silver cover, is probably my favourite Motown comp, with the Four Tops Different World being the standout track that I didn't already know, except for it's use by Saint Etienne.

(walks off singing 'in this world of ups and downs)
