The Planet Mondo Annual 2014

It's the annual Sadlads CD swap tonight, and my contribution -volume Five (we started back in 2010 with this) of the Planet Mondo annual brings you my favourite finds of 2014, threading together new nuggets and vintage discoveries. Although this is possibly the most contemporary-heavy set to date. Soul, funk, electro and power-mod and acoustic tunes are all in the mix. Along with a solid spread of Southenders: Wilko Johnson, Howling Black Soul, M G Boulter, West Weston & Martin McNeill and The Ends

And behold - two PM exclusives from Dave Woodcock, and Steve Weston with Martin McNeill - live in session versions of unreleased tracks.

It's yours to grab/stream  below

2014: Yesterday's tomorrow - today

Let's put the keys in the ignition - ZZ Top style, rev the engine, pump that pedal and head out on the wild and unknown highway of 2014 with a soundtrack on the stereo that's blazing and blasting a best of - errm, well 2012 *cue the furious squealing of brakes and burning rubber*

2012? - they chorused

Yes, somehow - I just plain forgot to post up my collection of fave finds from that year. But here it is, 23 tracks of  fresh-pressed tunes from vintage names (Hugh Cornwell, New York Dolls, Glen Matlock) Some international newbies (Hello Phones, François & the Atlas Mountains, Matsuki Ayumu) best of breed from that year (Eight Rounds Rapid, Thee Faction, Alfa 9, Fay Hallam) and as always rediscovered nuggets..

Scan the list below, then fill your booties, ipos and ears at the bottom. Salut!

The Planet Mondo Annual 2013

Boys, girls, inbetweeners and whatnots - here for your listening ears and grooving legs is the Planet Mondo Annual 2013, prepared for the festive Sadlads CD meetup of Piley, E F Rice, Jack Gestures, Paul Glasses and self. To recap on the rules....

1. Circulate to everyone a CD no longer than 80 minutes in length, containing tracks for new groups you have either got into for the first time this year or established artists you have perhaps picked up an old track/album for this year.

2. You may have more than one track for an artist on the CD (although 80 mins of Springsteen would be pushing it)

3. You supply all those taking part with a CD including a full track listing.

So what has 2013 pitched into my PM playlist?

Beard Rock - Kadaver

Nu Blues - The Strypes. Barrence Whitfield & the Savages

Local talent - Eight Rounds Rapid, David Woodcock. Plantman, The Glass Brides

Newly sifted Soul gems - Lonnie Lester, The Dells. The Precisons

The full list is below, rendered as a screen shot to avoid those pesky DMCA types... click on the pic for the complete t-list

During the 70-ish minute mix - listen out for appearances from Steve Lamacq, Edith Bowman and Courtney Taylor-Taylor. The PM Annual back issues can be collected hereabouts - except the 2012 edition, which will be wing-dinging its way to us soon-ish

So until then have yourselves a rocking New Year, and perhaps use this mix for prepping music should you be Hootanannying or Hogmanaying it up tonight...

The Annual Birthday Post

So, here we are - twelve months on from this and a run of extra miles clonked on the biological clock.

Instead of a mix of the years top tunes we've run out previously- this year, I'm submitting for your listening ears - the Podrophenia Annual 2012.

It's a best of year edition where Piley, the Podrophonic Listening Squad and myself - pick 'n' mix our favourite albums, singles, books, gigs and events of the last year.. With Podrophonic salutes and shouts going out to TV Smith, Thee Faction, Eight Rounds Rapid, Hello Phones, Zoë Howe and Syd Moore with Best Single and Best Album nods going to Blow Up records - but what for?

The Annual Birthday Post

Yes it's that time of year again another 365 days older (or 366 on a leap year obvs). In previous outings we've covered ever-cherished soul favouritesteen nights out and even look a likes..

So by way of change,  thought this year could be the time to introduce a tick list of hits and highlights found over the past 12 months, by way of a 24 track a mix of mostly new tunes and a tail-end sprinkling of vingate bits - all of which were new my old ears this year.

I Like It. What Is It?

Poster by Anthony Burrill

You may remember some yap a while back about the Annual Sad Lads CD Swap. Well tonight is that night - CDs will be exchanged, pints will be pulled and the whip will probably end up in Piley's charge (a pub role similar to the Monopoly banker).

This year I'm going public with my pickings and have mixed the comp as downloadable take-away version. To paraphrase E F Rice's rules....the tracks don't have to be from 2010 (although almost a third are) just new-to-you tunes. There may be a few possible eyebrow-raisers and non-blogged bits in the bundle, but these are my most played tunes of 2010 and the track list can be found in the comments.

The Planet Mondo Annual Report - 2010

Two tunes bubbling under that didn't seem to fit the mood of the mix were ...

Asobi Seksu - Strawberries (Ulrich Schnauss remix)

An infectious collective of indie crystals and whispy vocals shining some brightness through a misty fug of thunderous rumbles and shoegazy layers.

Memory Tapes - Bicycle: a musical smoothie where the taste of Talking Heads and a tone of New Order are rewhisked for the digital generation..
