Art and about

It's that time of year when Southend's answer to St Ives - Leigh on Sea, puts on a parade of the finest artistic talent from in and outside of the area with its Art Trail. Taking a polite ramble around the upper regions of SS9, The Broadway, Leigh Road, or down to to the Old Town, you can tick off a list of thirty six artists displaying at twenty three venues - shops, cafes and bars. From dynamic ceramics to local musician themed coasters on sale at Micky Denny's improv Record Shop.. which, will be host to a few in-store performances on Saturday 14th June...

Grab your guide to the LAT hereabouts...

For earthier entertainment of a Saturday night, at Southend's most musical boozer - The Railway, there's a double fisted ding-dong of Thames Delta dynamite and London garage a go-go..

In the Essex corner: Bif Bam Pow return the The Railway for their first gig since, booming the roof off in their pre-season friendly with the Len Price 3 (match report here at The Retroman Blog).

In the Capital Corner: Londiniums Sonic Jewels head the up the bill. Described as 'Hendrix, MC5 and The Stooges whilst giving a nod of approval to 70's Glam Rock'

In between and after these two sets of tear-aways -I'll be pitching simpatico sounds into a strictly non playlisted run of whatever-fits-the-mood-tunes....

A couple roaring hits of late have included..

It all starts 8:30pm Southend Central Time. Come on down and shake whatever wobbles....

The Mutants, Wilko Johnson and Wayne Kramer: Kicking Out the Jams from Motor City to Oil City

THE MUTANTS

WALKING WOUNDED/BRIXTON EST LOCO

On Killer Tracks Records

Kicking Out the Jams from Motor City to Oil City

The Mutants
are a twin-turbo unit of Chris Constantinou (The Wolfmen, Adam Ant) and Paul Frazer (Black Futures) penning new tunes and recruiting three generations of all-star icons and idols for guest appearances

In a Mutant’s super-scoop, lead-off single Walking Wounded reunites two pure bred legends  Wilko Johnson and Wayne Kramer - back together for the first time since sharing a bill at The London Rock n’ Roll Show, Wembley, 1972. Wilko has repeatedly said seeing the MC5‘s performance that day changed his life, as he quit teaching to become a full time rock ‘n’ roller.

A key moment of rock 'n' roll history, Walking Wounded not only reunites Wilko and Wayne but, is the first time the duo have recorded together.  A full-pelt belter ‘Wounded’ sees Johnson and Kramer trading and exchanging Oil city skitter and Detroit squeals, while out-front is a raw power performance from Belfast's finest, Jake Burns – backed by a dream team rhythm section of Rat Scabies and Norman Watt-Roy alongside Chris Constantinou and Paul Frazer

Flipside Brixton Est Loco: is agit-punk-reggae with sound system boom and TV Smith and Neville Staples tag-teaming, backed by Rat Scabies, The Specials Horn Players and Chris Constantinou and Paul Frazer

Walking Wounded and Brixton Est Loco are twin teaser trailers for the album The Rhythm And Punk Review with you later this year where The Mutants are joined by Wilko, Wayne, Rat and a rogues gallery of Norman Watt Roy, TV Smith, Charlie Harper, Jake Burns, Knox, Neville Staple, Judy Nylon, Charlie Harper, Beki Bondage, Texas Terri Bomb, Preston Heyman and more - for filthy and furious floor-shakers,  retracing the roots of punk, new wave and ska, and reuniting first generation icons and pioneers with the nest new young-bloods blazing away today.

A punk primer for the iGeneration

The Mutants are coming. Are you ready to be mutated?

2014: Yesterday's tomorrow - today

Let's put the keys in the ignition - ZZ Top style, rev the engine, pump that pedal and head out on the wild and unknown highway of 2014 with a soundtrack on the stereo that's blazing and blasting a best of - errm, well 2012 *cue the furious squealing of brakes and burning rubber*

2012? - they chorused

Yes, somehow - I just plain forgot to post up my collection of fave finds from that year. But here it is, 23 tracks of  fresh-pressed tunes from vintage names (Hugh Cornwell, New York Dolls, Glen Matlock) Some international newbies (Hello Phones, François & the Atlas Mountains, Matsuki Ayumu) best of breed from that year (Eight Rounds Rapid, Thee Faction, Alfa 9, Fay Hallam) and as always rediscovered nuggets..

Scan the list below, then fill your booties, ipos and ears at the bottom. Salut!

The Sunday Sessions: Flats and Fifths

Swinging at the Sunday Sessions - get me in the floral shirt!

Flats and fifths: those steps and semitones that give jazz and blues their particular modal moan. Jive along to The Railway this Sunday and you'll be for in an afternoon of flats, fifths, blues and boogaloo - live! As the always excellent (and one of my top ten favourite guitarists) Martin McNeill and his Bottletop Blues Band take the floor from four.

The Bottletops are something of revolving repertory (excepting JJ Zarbo, who 'never misses a gig' on bass) - with a different musical mix each session - sometimes keys, sometimes sax, sometimes special guests: Wes Weston - harp, Wilko Johnson - guitar, Digby Fairweather - trumpet.

So if you're spinning anywhere around the SS postal code zone this sunday - why not ramble your way to The Railway from four and see who's sitting in for this Sunday's session

Dig'n' the Bottletop Blues Band

I'll be operating the in-house stereogram, spinning in jump blues, New Orleans shufflers, funk work-outs, hammond happenings and reggae shakers

A couple from the crates popped into the pot may well be...

The Money Programme: Take 2

Four tunes a pop amongst Daryl, Piley and myself. I'm opening my account with Magic Michael, Steve Marriot and Lee Perry.

The 50th Podrophenia - a Widescreen Edition

More cross-pop pollinations from Sean Hartter here

When Piley and I first started recording our ramblings and rattlings in his kitchen/my kitchen 3 years back - I don't think either of us would have expected to hit the 50 mark! Well certainly not by now anyway.

But, here we are, our half century later - where tonight's theme - a Film Special, sees us joined in the bunker by Dan from the Blog of Eternal Disappointment and dipping into a jamboree bag of cinematic sounds. I'm not sure what's on Piley's or Dan's playlist, but from me expect: a reggae refit of a Bond theme, a cult classic with a soul spin - some Hammond magic and a film only track from group who were pencilled in to take the leads in early/60s Lord of the Rings...and a mystery film theme

It's been one of the toughest trawls reducing all the contenders down to just four tunes, leaving this lot seated on the subs bench: Roy Budd, Electric Banana (below for both),  Quincy Jones, and Jagger as Turner.

Should you fancy grabbing issue 49: Covers (an all suggestions special) download is here or via iTunes

Sometimes it's hard to be a woman

I'm a little bit country. I'm a little bit rock 'n roll

Take your partners for a rootin' tootin' tear-up as we go 'Kinda Country' on tonight's live action Radio Podrophenia - where everything from Abba covers to Zydeco stompers get pitched in the pot.

The Elvis back catalogue has been on and off the subs bench all week, as I've been doing some king-size juggling between outtakes and obscurities from the undubbed masters album One Hundred Years From Now and the blue-aired booty Cut Me and I Bleed, which in essence, is Effing and Jeffing with Elvis.
Similarly I still can't decide which way to swing on the offbeat. Either Marlene Webber's Stand By Your Man or the banjo 'n' blue beat bounce of Beverly Hillbilly Ska

And Fi Jacobs from The Railway Hotel drops in for a round up of what's on at Southend's most rock 'n' roll local during October. So buckle up from 9 for a ride around Podrophenia country

Marlene Webber - Stand By Your Man

Granville Williams Orchestra - Beverly Hillbilly Ska

Natter-wise I'd like to try and nail look-a-likes for this 'orrible lot.  I'm claiming Mr Top Left as David Beckham - but what about the other salty ol' sea dogs..?

This masterclass in nifty-fingered frettery from Albert Lee will be appearing at some point tonight..

If you're not iTuned up - you can load up last week's Radio Podrophenia via this MP3 DL

And don't forget you can grab - Dolly does disco and northern soul here

Down at the Doctors

The full set of Muppet band (Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem) concert posters are viewable here

Take a seat and wait to be called - is the tone of tonight's tunes. Bo Diddley-Itis, Fever, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings Just Dropped In (To See What Condition My Condition Was In) are all on this evenings sick-list.

Natter-wise we may be compiling a list of acts and artists that sound like medical conditions, or perhaps a list of fictional Doctors. And rolling out a few fruity new DIY jingles from Drakey Girl and Phil Hubbard

If you're fit as fiddle drop by from 9 tonight, if you're fit to drop - take two aspirin, tuck up in bed and tune in to Chance Radio  for tonight's Radio Podrophonia doings

Tom Jones - Dr Love

Lee Perry's Doctor on the Go. The bizarrest refit of a TV theme.
