Funky Friday - Folking About On The River

So the Annual Leigh Folk Festival rolls round again this weekend, and really, who needs Glastonbury - when last year's LFF (my first visit) was such a joy and a gem. Please leave any ideas of fuzzy folkies a'wailing and a'wauling about shipwrecks, smugglers and sweethearts long gone, at the gatepost please - this free, two day event of live musical doings is coloured with all shades and styles from solo strummers to ska bands and young folkies to old rockers..

Saturday sees fun for all the family in the Library Gardens with live bands on rotation, perhaps circus skills for the kiddies and dusty ol' vinyl stalls for the dusty ol' dads. Why not bring some plonk and perhaps bagels (from the Leigh Bagel Bar). While Sunday is bands amongst the boats down Old Leigh way with it's wharfs, seafood stalls and those fishermen's pubs...

So, if you're at a loose end this weekend, why not take the C2C to Leigh On Sea, where you may hear funky folk along the lines of..

John & Beverley Martyn - Sorry to Be So Long

Kathy Smith - It's Taking So Long

Heather Jones - Penrhyn Gwyn
If any continental viewers are wondering what's the crazy talk on this track - It's Welsh! Claimed to be Britain's oldest language and still spoken by over half a million people in Wales..

I won't be posting anything on Michael Jackson or Farrah Fawcett, I'll leave it to others who'll do them more justice than I ever could - but will spin this up in memory ...

Hey there. I enjoyed your post. Never listened to much in the way of folk music. I do like what I've heard. Have a good weekend.

Meet on the Ledge is such a pretty song, a great tribute.

Also, I really liked the Heather Jones song. I'm such a dork! I only just realized that I can download these songs with the link!!! I'm going to have to backtrack and download all my faves.

Why didn't you tell me Mondo??? :)

You doing Saturday and Sunday? What time will you be in Library Gardens tomorrow? I might be forced to knock up a picnic for the occasion.

We'll be there about 1'ish - probably, and packing bagels from the Bagel Bar and perhaps a few scoops too - might have to tap you up for a boiled egg if your picnicking - Bleech has had to bail though Car Trouble, isn't that an Ants song?

Yes, this is about the time of year when I begin to envy those who live on the coast. I fancy a bit of that meself but instead I shall be grilling some 300 burgers and snags at the kids school summer fete on Saturday. Dang!

The Smoke Fairies sound interesting. I'm tempted to go gigging on the basis of good band names.

Did you see Alisdair Roberts? I have a couple of albums by him and really like his miserable broodiness. Well. if I'm in the mood for that kind of thing.

Like the Kathy Smith track. I've never heard of her - is it recent?

We missed Alisdair Roberts - they had a power cut on the stage so all acts were an hour late.. but saw so much good music and amazingly would say half of the performers weren't your typical grizzled folkies, but young'uns in their teens and twenties cracking out the reels and jigs - very encouraging..

You really should give it a go next year Cocktails both days are fab events..

Kathy Smith - an oldie I think, I've got it on the Andy Votel 'Folk Is Not A Four Letter' Word comp..
