Dear Diary - January

Click on the pic for full size

I must get this in before the month's out. My old Radio 1 (275/285) 1979 calendar, found while lofting the Christmas bits. Bare-bones on entries and typo-heavy, it's mainly a record of discos and ice skating (a school trip to The Michael Sobell center if I remember). So, Shuggy Otis's Ice Cold Daydream seems an appropriate combo of the two

Shuggy Otis - Ice Cold Daydream

January 2010 may have been the coldest since records blah, blah, blah... but 79 and The Winter of Discontent wasn't shy of ice, snow doom and gloom either.

PS - the "Urcha" quote is a misheard reference to this Courage Best ad'

Discos on a Wednesday?! Outrageous!

Every two weeks, a coke and crisps type thing in the hall at the local park (John Burrows, Hadleigh). Wonder what the Smash Hits covers were for Jan. They're probably in my sagging loft somewhere too.

I had all of the ones lovingly scanned in here

Marvellous - what a fab gallery. Although my earliest one (issue 2 I think with Elvis Costello cover) isn't there..

I was wearing Doctor Martens and Lord Anthony flares at the time FC, and remember it taking forever to thaw out.

I'll be posting one month each month Mick. It gets livelier as it goes on and becomes a record of records bought and trips out etc...

PS Thank God for Spell Cheque..

tip top stuff odd that there was a time that noel was a benigh if slightly smug presence in our lives rather than the irksome blob of annoyance he is now.

Cor, the week commencing Jan 8 was a bit full-on for a nipper, wasn't it?

Love the pencilled-in stick 'arm' coming from Noel's doggy friend, too. Great stuff.

I always wanted some of his Welly Stickers BL (not that I had wellies) and his Sunday morning show was a fixture for my tranny (not that sort of tranny BTW).

It's a great site Romo, Davy linked to it above. I was hoping to see the Cook, Jones and ginger bloke Professional cover..Steve had a Don't Mess With the S.A.S tee shirt which went straight on my shopping list.

You wait ISB it ramps right up in the coming months, with plenty more doodles. The Python and Goodies books for were the influence for those I think.

And if “urcha” is worth saying once, it’s worth saying 3 times eh??! I remember clearly buying “Gercha” on 7” single in Kelly Radio in Hadleigh. I bought it with The Lone Ranger by erm, can’t remember!! I think I only bought it because I liked that intro (tarmatawatta…..) Kenny Everett used to play that bit a lot.

You were certainly a regular at the local disco’s eh?!! I’d imagine the British Legion disco was a particular winner?? “OK kids, this ones the theme to the dambusters…..”

Piley - It was Quantam Jump. I remember spending many an English lesson writing the lyrics to singles in the back of my poetry book. That was one of them. Oh dear.

Romo's nailed it P Quantum Jump were the band. I think it was used in the Kenny Everett TV show intro. The bloke in Kelly's was right ol crosspatch wasn't he - always seemed to have the hump about something?

I used to write Damned lyrics in the back of my books Romo. A Lively Arts line ' I'm gonna be a lazy slob, stuff the folks and stuff the job' was shown to my parents as some sort of effort-indicator one open evening - they were fine, once I explained it was a Damned lyric that had become stuck in my noggin. Always hated that maths teacher

Jan's the lightest month of the lot Ally - it really starts ramping up around March. I didn't realise I was such a Disco King until dusting off this calendar

Now that video... that brings back a memory of about this time... 1979 - Oh that was the year I saw Led Zep at Knebworth! Chas and Dave were on the support bill! In those days things like that were so random, not the "rock only" type festivals you get now, more Glastonbury.

But also about then we had a "jolly boys outing" to Margate. We found a pub (surprise surprise) in minutes of getting settled in came a load of cockneys all down on their "Jolly Boys outing". Soon one of them got on the piano and started banging out songs including more than one Chas & Dave number. My mate gets up to go to the bar and the piano player and loudest of this bunch says... "Hey mate know any good jokes?" to which my mate replied without a hint of joviality "Yep; your f***ing piano playing".

We were closer to the door thankfully as we had to battle a retreat out of there and then all laid into my mate for starting the fracases once a couple of streets away!
