Pop Quiz: The Golden Hour with Simon Bates

Hello bloggers and browers. Simes here, you may remember my resonant rumbles and mahogany tones from features like...

The BBFC intro's on clunky old VHS tapes., The Golden Hour, Our Tune *reaches for a large onion and a box of mansize Kleenex* Look loves, can't hang around I've got a show going over on Smoove and a couple of voice overs to crack off during the ad' breaks - but while I'm here how about a quicky game of The Golden Hour...

This timeless poppet of a tune could come from almost any era - sixties or seventies, nineties or naughties. Of course it can only be one of them... But - which, was the year

Factory - Gone

You could do the Googledoodledoo - but you'd only be cheating yourselves/

So, please post your answers to PO box 247, Portishead, Bristol in the comments box

Yer actual Ken Bruce boombox as won by me last Bank Holiday Monday

That was great Mondo, had never heard it before, I would say late 60s but can't pin it down any further. But I bet a certain Mr Brown and Mr Squire would know.

Sharp-shooting Drew. Although I’ll say no more for the mo’ – but thought it was an indie band (Ride, Twist type thing) when it first popped into play ..

Oh and I think it's a cover

A toughie - a good tune, never heard it before. Part of me is saying 67 but for someone reason that seems to obvious, something about it also says 66 but I'm going to go for early 68.

Very good FW. I'll keep hush for a bit longer...though

I vote 1968 too, although like you at first I thought it might be a band on Creation from about 1986 trying to sound like a 60s combo. The middle eight, which sounds genuinely 60s, swayed it.

"middle eight, which sounds genuinely 60" - ooh, get you Mr H sounding like a proper muso.

Not much of clue, in fact it's not a clue at all, just extra info. Factory's versh is a cover - this is the original

I see I also used the word 'combo' to my shame. Apologies.

Ta-da! 1968 it is, well done Furtherwick and Davy. Drew top marks too. When Gone first popped into play thought it was something from Precious but turned out to be Jagged Time Lapse. Vol 1..

And I think Julian Cope used it on one of his stoner comps..

Wow...I chimed in late I suppose. I was actually going to say it was from the late 8ties-early 9ties, judging by the sound quality. I was picking up a psych revival vibe... just goes to show you can never judge a book by the cover, huh? :-)

Peace and blessings.

Forget the quizz, what's this Ken Bruce boom box thing? What does it actually do?! It doesn't look like its capable of even creating a slight boom.

And sounds like congratulations are in order!

aaaaarghhh not looking at the answers is tearingy nosey nose off but i reckon it's a 60's thing what with that guotar outro but it could easilybe a mash up orsome modern pastiche (what sean connery eats in cornwall)

Cheers Vince - that's exactly the vibe I was getting 'heavy shoegaze'- great tune though. Check out the Paul Revere original further up..

Hey, hey Cocktails. It's my official Ken Bruce/Pop Master MP3 player. On the off chance, I phoned in on bank holiday Monday last week and got through - romped it with 33 points {only 2 wrong}- it was on iPlayer last week. Although I've got a copy if you fancy a listen..

Don't look above Vince's entry for the answers Ally - but you're very warm. Pastiche - G.E.N.I.O.U.S

So that's what a Ken Bruce MP3 looks like. What was your 3 in 10 on? Something impossible I bet like Kon Kan or Barry Blue. Great tune. My guess is also 1968. There's a great track by them on 'Nuggets 2' called 'Path Through the Forest'.

Mondo said...

Well done Rich it is 1968! Gone is the B side of 'Path'
My 3 in 10 was the blooming Eagles! Who only had 7 hits so got to get almost a 50% hit rate and I'm hopeless with beardy bands

I did Popmaster in August 2006 and also scored 33. Won a digital radio and very good it was too.

Top marks1 What was your 3 in 10?The last radio comp I went in for was Bits and Pieces type quiz onstage at a Radio Luxembourg Roadshow. Won that too - with a load of Radio Luxembourg freebies and a crate of Crocadillo wine more here
