Well, did you know it was actually a cover? A cover of a track already three years old, and taken from Gershon Kingsley's 1969 album 'Music To Moog By'...
Never one to miss a contemporary pop-trick (like the local Marching Militaire, or Brass Band that screech out refits of cinematic hits) Herp Alpert, had himself a wallop at Popcorn
Goodbye to bubbling, fat analogue sounds, sine waves and Moogadoodledoo . Hello to the soothing muted toot of the Tijuana Brass, the tropical lapping of steel drums and the soft plod of xylophonic pop...
Both varieties are below - so, why not try a taste test and see which you flavour you favour...
Gershon Kingsley - Popcorn
Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass - Popcorn

I can’t choose between the two PM.
I thought it would be easy because I like the original but the “Tijuana” has got something about it!
Hey there. Very cool. I have never heard this song before in any of its versions. This was quite a treat for me. I liked both of them, but the Herb version is more up my alley. Cheers!
I've got a history of being a huge Herb Fan (got most of the sixties albums)- but have to tip towards the Gersh' vers'myself
I love the Gershon Kingsley version, it is almost other worldly. Brilliant.
But trusty old Herb Alpert's version isn't too shabby either.
Reminder to self: must post some more moog...
It's mad isn't it - the Gershon version, still sounds like the future, whereas Hot Butter's sounds like a science programme from the seventies
He also does a thumping take of Paperback Writer on the album..
PS have you checked out The Moog Cookbook - theirAir remix from a few years back is a peach
I thought I used to be able to play popcorn by slapping my cheeks whilst mouthing the notes... well I thought I could... I can't and it just hurt doing that...
The Tijunana has something going for it
You've got to youtube that F-Ron, and once you've got the thought of slap-cheek popcorn in your head it's almost impossible not to have a go...
