Dear Diary:1980 - March

Huzzah and hurrah! Finally, after two long months, the PVC trousers finally land on the doormat (7th) But what's this, just four days later - 'zip fell off' - Ho hum! They surely can't be the same pair that split on the 28th! That really would be too much...

Poor ol' Geoff 'narked' on the 9th by way of fire extinguisher hijinks was one of two parkies and the softy Mr Barrowclough to strict ol' Bill's Mr Mackay. Incidentally later 'narks' included: heaving the Witch's Hat clean off of it's pole, leaving it stranded on the asphalt. Balancing a bucket of water atop Geoff's office door, which, landed perfectly placed, upside down on his bonce and had us chased all around Hadleigh by police in panda cars.

Parkie Geoff looked exactly like Oscar Goldman, lived with his mum in Benfleet and took an unhealthy interest in my PVC troos ..rolling out regular references and questions about them. Bizarrely, last week, I had a call from an old mate (Jay, appears on the 19th Feb - when I crashed his bike) - who had just spotted Geoff in Benfleet, with dyed hair 'the colour of a dog's coat' and a briefcase and mac to complete the Oscar Goldman look .

Other scraps of note - pig's ear (10th) was some biology lesson offal/off cut found and flung about on the bus (number 24) - which I think, led to the next day's reports of a rash - charming!

A quiet month musically - just the UK Subs Warhead (did they ever release anything on black vinyl) so I'll give A and B sides - the Subs Another Kind of Blues album (17th) , The Damned's Music For Pleasure (14th) and the Sex Pistols File (22nd) round out the budding punk collection..

For those who haven't heard I met Charlie Harper at a gig and got talking to his wife about Ukulele's. Turns out they're both keen uke strummers - of course I had to ask: can they play the Warhead riff on their ukes? A giggled 'Yes' was was the reply.

UK Subs - Warhead

UK Subs - The Harper

Not quite hitting the hi-randomness range of last month's charts - both Top 75s are a polarised playlist of pick 'n' mix bits...

Top 75 singles

Top 75 Albums

Oh and trailers for

Nightwing - premium cheese, but a Mancini theme

Bloody Hell, look at that Top 10! Games Without Frontiers, Echo Beach, All Night Long, Turning Japanese. I sometimes think my love for 79 and 80 is clouded by nostalgia, but you can't argue with statistics.

I remember Liquid Gold on TOTP; the drummer had a keyboard attached to his gold lame shorts and at one point would wander away from his kit and the singer would play a tune on it. You know, I reckon they were miming.

Warhead is my favourite UK Subs single. I'm sure I had Party In Paris on black vinyl but all others I can recall were coloured.

Great isn't it Thumper - and the album charts are eye-openers too. I've got Anyway You Do It by Liquid Gold on K-tel's Action Replay classic comp..

One of their best Simon no question - funny how it feels relevant again almost 30 years later. My 'Paris' is sort of ashocking orangeade colour, did you know Captain Sensible does keyboards on it?

Charlie's solo outing Barmy London Army is snot green - while next single Teenage is sort of champagne pink

You'd never have split your trousers at the school disco if you'd just stuck to a nice sensible pair like Peter Powell's.

I like: Thursday 13th Bought Music For Pleasure. Is there any other kind?

One of the best years for music, and what a month, as Thumper rightly points out.

The album chart is really interesting isn't it? The top 10 is full of MOR, but then 11-30 is stuffed with New Wave, Ska, Punk and Metal. You get the sense that there was a new younger generation asserting itself. I heard the other day that Britain had a second Baby Boom in the early 60s; perhaps the richness of the charts at the end of the 70s is a result of this.

It must have been that dodgy PVC pair ISB: soggy in the heat. Brittle in the cold - God knows what I was doing to split them!

Music For Pleasure: it's The Damned album with Barney Bubbles art in the photo FC, produced by Floyd's Nick Mason I think..

If you haven't yet, have a peep at Feb's chart - it's a mind-fry Thumper. All the diary posts have singles/and/or album charts with them - flicking back, it seems incredible how fads and phases came and went so quickly

Shurely this series is the sine qua non of Planet Mondo.

Pete looks like he's auditioning for Modern Romance.

21st: 'Health Talk' - sounds ominous.

Sine qua wha?!

I'm a little concerned about 'thrasher' borrowing your records! Hope he returned them...sounds like a right character?

I've got a Peter Powell story for you which can only be told off mic!

Danny Thrasher - he always fancied himself as a punky tearaway, but wore a red leather box jacket and had an early teen bum-fluff moustache. Although on Thrasher's final day before he left to relocate to Devon, he swore and punched the art teacher (Mr Seargent:looked like Spike Milligan)

How about a Twitter DM, txt or email J - not to do with lavender marriages is it?

Danny Thrasher? With a name like that, he MUST have ended up playing guitar in a third-division punk band. And getting a speed habit. Please tell me he didn't end up Branch Manager at the Halifax in Newton Abbot.

a pigs ear on the 10th, leading to a rash on the 11th??! (or should that be a rash-er.. sorry!).

Much too late for a health talk on the 21st I fear...
